Engineering Career

JOHN MEHAFFEY was trained at Belfast as a marine engineer and obtained a first-class Board of Trade certificate.

He was apprenticed with a firm of millwrights and boilermakers in Belfast and afterwards worked in the locomotive works of the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway for three years.

From 1888 to 1901 he served as second and chief engineer at sea on cross-channel and foreign trading steamers. After a further period as assistant surveyor to a firm of consulting engineers he was appointed engineer in the lubricating department of the Standard Oil Company.

In 1911 he relinquished this position and commenced consulting practice on his own behalf. The intervention of the War, however, prevented the development of this practice. He took up munitions work, and in 1917 was appointed engineer surveyor to the Norwich Union Fire Insurance Society.

In 1923 he was obliged to retire, owing to ill-health, and his death occurred on 16th September 1928, at the age of 61.[3]
