Biography

Elizabeth was the daughter of Margaret Keating and Michael Mahony. She was baptised on 22 September 1856 at Kilcommon. Sponsors for her baptism were Richard Conors and Margaret Ryan.

She emigrated to New Zealand, on the ship 'Fernglen', at Nelson in 1879 with her sisters Annie and Ellen.

In 1880 she married Stewart Monteith at Gilmers Hotel, Mahera Quay, Greymouth on the West Coast of New Zealand. Elizabeth was 23 and Stewart aged 38. Their marriage was officiated by the Minister, William Heningham Root.

This Marriage was solemnized between us Stewart MONTEITH Elizabeth MAHONY Married, after the delivery to me of the Certificate required by the Act of the General Assembly of New Zealand, intituled "The Marriage Act, 1854," by William Heningham ROOT, Officiating Minister In the presence of us Elizabeth Mary FORSYTH, Gilmer's Hotel, Greymouth Hamilton GILMER, Greymouth. I certify that the above is a true copy of the Entry in the Register Book of Marriages kept by me. W. Henigham ROOT.

She had 7 known children in her marriage, Marion, Charles, Stewart, Martha, Elizabeth, William Patrick and Matilda Jane.

Six years after Stewart's death, Elizabeth sailed to Australia in 1927, settling in Sydney.

She died in 1936 age 79, at Savoy Flat, Hardie Street in Darlinghurst, Sydney.

Elizabeth Monteith is buried at Rookwood Church of England Cemetery. SECTION 12 ROW 19 GRAVE 2541.[1]
