Biography

Robert Te Kotahi Mahuta was born in 1939 at Te Kuiti, King Country, New Zealand.[1] He was raised at Waahi Pa, Huntly by the Fifth Maori King, King Koroki and his wife, Te Atairangikaahu nee Wanakore.

In biological terms, Robert was King Koroki's nephew. His Grandmother was Piupiu Te Wherowhero and his Great Grandfather was, Te Wherowhero II, a full brother of King Mahuta. Te Wherowhero II was also a full brother to Tiahuia which meant he was equally connected to Te Atairangikaahu Sr.

Sir Robert orchestrated the Tainui-Waikato land claim, where in 1995 the Crown compensated the tribe with a $170 million settlement, the return of some land and a Crown apology.

Over his distinguished career Sir Robert served as a Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commissioner, Chairman of the Maori Development Corporation, Director for Maori Studies at Waikato University and chairman of the Tainui Maori Trust Board.

He passed away in 2001.
