Biography

Salvatore Maida is born at 6AM and baptized Salvatorem on 7 June 1863. He is the son of Vincenzo Maida and Emmanuela Cascio. His godparents are Giuseppe and Gaetana Maida, brother and sister.[1]

Salvatore marries Angela Dragotta, daughter of Bernardo and Carmela di Bello, on 4 January 1898 in New York before witnesses Francesco Riina and Francesco Saltaformaggio. Salvatore lives at 2356 3rd Ave in Manhattan. He is 34 (b. 1864), single, born in Italy, the son of Vincenzo Maida and Emanella Coscio. Angela Dragotta lives at the same address. She is 27 (b. 1871), single, born in Italy, the daughter of Bernardo Dragotta and Carmela Dibello. It is the first marriage for them both. They are wed by an alderman. The groom and witnesses all sign their names. Angela signs with a cross.[2][3]

In 1901, his mother and his brother, Stefano, join him in New York City. The address on the manifest is difficult to read but it may be 243 E 124th St.

In the 1920 federal census of Manhattan taken 20 January, Salvatore Maida, 56 (b. 1864), heads a household at 112 E. 112th St with his wife, Angelina, 49 (b. 1871), children Mary (Emanuela), 21 (b. 1899), Stephania, 10 (b. 1910), and Stephen, 6 (b. 1914), and his brother, Stephen Maida, 62 (b. 1858). Salvatore and Angelina were born in Italy, both emigrated in 1897 and naturalized in 1902. He owns his home and is an employer in the dress manufacturing industry. Brother Stephen is single, emigrated from Italy in 1901, and works as a cigar maker.[4]

He marries for the second time to the widow Filippa Toscano in January 1929.[5] Salvatore Maida lives at 147 E. 116th St, in NYC. He is 63, widower, real estate broker, born in Italy, the son of Vincenzo Maida and Emanuela Caseo. This is his second marriage. Filippa Sparacino lives at 4072 3rd Ave in NYC. She is 49, a widow, maiden name Filippa Toscano. She was born in Italy, the daughter of Giuseppe Toscano and Anna Maria Perrera. This is her second marriage. They are wed on 23 January 1929 by a deputy city clerk. Witnesses are Joseph Cirito and Carmelo Cirito. They all sign their names.[6]

Salvatore Maida dies at 2151 Cruger Ave, a tenement in the Bronx, on 25 January 1936. He was a widower, age 72, a real estate broker, born in Italy, a resident of the US and NYC for 48 years, son of Vincenzio Maida and Emanuela Coscia, both born in italy. The cause of death is acute cardiac failure with a contributing cause of chronic cardiovascular disease. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery on 28 January 1936. The body is released to undertakers by the son, Stephen Maid, of the same home address.[7] [8]
