Mrs Elizabeth Anne Mellinger (née Maidment), 41, was born on 1 June 1870 in Pimlico, Middlesex, England. She was the daughter of William Maidment and Sarah Tack.[1]

She married Claude Leinard Deschamps Mellenger on 13 March 1895 at Saint Mary's Church in the parish of Islington (Upper Street) in the county of Middlesex, England. She was 25 years old, a spinster, resided at Walthamstow, Essex and her father William Henry Maidment was a Bailiff. Claude was 28, a bachelor, a clerk, resided at 403 City Road and his father Claude Leinard Mellenger was a Gentleman. Neither father was listed as deceased and both bride and groom signed the parish register. Witnesses were William Firth and the bride's sister Emily Maidment.[5][6]

They had 5 children together before the 1901 Census when she was visiting in the home of her sister Emily Maidment Gurney and husband Claude was at home in their personal residence.

Around the time of the birth of their last child, daughter Constance Sylvia in 1903, the couple were estranged and Claude departed in 1907 for Australia leaving Elizabeth and their children virtually destitute.

In the 1911 Census, Elizabeth was at the same home that her estranged husband had been in as a nurse child in the 1881 Census with sisters 'Elizabeth Carpenter and Sylvia Carpenter.

In the 1911 Census, daughter Madeline Violet was an inmate in a children's home in Wimbledon, Surrey and Elizabeth was working as a servant.

Elizabeth was enroute to the United States to work as an au pair for the wealthy Colgate family and gave her last residence as Wimbledon, Surrey as she and her daughter Madeline Violet boarded the Titanic at Southampton as 2nd second class passengers (ticket number 250644, 19 10s).

Mrs Mellinger and her daughter survived the sinking. They entered lifeboat 14 and were later transferred to 12 by Fifth Officer Lowe. According to one grandson, Elizabeth went deaf prematurely, and all her life suffered a nervous reaction from the shock of the sinking.

Elizabeth and her oldest child Eugenie sailed aboard the ship Oceanic and arrived on October 30, 1912 at Ellis Island, New York City, New York. Their last address was 4 Old Field Road in Ridgeway, Wimbledon, Surrey and their destination was Bennington, Vermont, USA. [10]

After arriving in New York, she went to Bennington, Vermont to visit Mrs Cresson Jones who had lost her husband Charles in the sinking. Elizabeth and all her children eventually emigrated to Canada.

On 15 April 1939, she and her daughter Madeline, together with Emma Bliss and Samuel John Collins, met for a Titanic reunion dinner at the Royal York Hotel, Toronto.

Elizabeth Anne Mellenger died on 4 January 1962 and is buried in St. John's Anglican Church Cemetery in Stevensville, Niagara, Ontario, where she shares a gravestone with her daughter Eugenie.[14]
