Biography

Charles Maitland married in Nov 1652, an heiress, Elizabeth, younger daughter of Richard Lauder of Haltoun, who having made a large financial settlement on his elder daughter settled, in his lifetime, his landed estates on Elizabeth and her husband, reserving the usual lifetime reservations etc., on condition that Charles Maitland and his descendants assume the surname and Arms of Lauder of Haltoun.[1] The Lauders had been at Haltoun since 1377.[2]

On 21st February 1654, Charles Maitland obtained confirmation of a charter dated 23/7/1651 of the Forest of Lauder in Berwickshire which he had purchased from the co-heiresses of Robert Lauder of that Ilk. In a Contract between Anna MacDowgill, relict of Robert Lauder of that ilk, and Anna and Isabel Lauder, their daughters, on one part, and Charles Maitland of Haltoun, on the other part, the said Anna and her daughters bind themselves to renounce all claim to lands of the forest of Lauder and the Walkmyll, in return they would retain the lands of Dalcoif, in Mertoun parish, dated 6th July 1655.[3]

In 1661 he was made a Privy Counsellor, and on 1st June 1670 was appointed a Lord of Session as Lord Haltoun. The following year he was Treasurer-Depute for Scotland. He was also General of the Mint. However, in 1681 he was accused, in Parliament, of gross perjury and on 31st August 1682 he was deprived of all of his offices and fined £72,000 sterling. That was subsequently appealed and reduced.[4]

Charles Maitland Born 1620 in Lethingtonmap is not the Son of John (Maitland) First Duke of Lauderdale KG PC ( born 1616) , but his brother. John Maitland left no male heir, consequently his dukedom and his English titles became extinct, but he was succeeded in the earldom by his brother Charles Maitland, 3rd Earl of Lauderdale.
