Biography

John Lauder (or Maitland), succeeded his brother Richard as 5th Earl of Lauderdale in 1695, and was 1st Baronet (1680), and was the second son of Charles Maitland, 3rd Earl of Lauderdale,

This John Maitland, brother and successor to Richard, Earl of Lauderdale, was designated Sir John Lauder of Halton [sic] when he sat in parliament for Edinburghshire as such in 1685-6, 1689, 1689-93. As Sir John Maitland of Ravelrig, in 1693 he formally assumed the designation of Lauder of Haltoun, in lieu of Maitland of Ravelrig. He succeeded his brother officially as Earl of Lauderdale, 28th August, 1696. Previous to his accession to the title he was created a Baronet of Nova Scotia, 18th November 1680; he was made an Advocate, 30th July of the same year; appointed Lord of Session 28th October 1689 as Lord Ravelrig; was a Privy Counsellor at the Revolution; Colonel of the Edinburghshire Militia 1689; took his seat in Parliament 8th September 1696, when he supported the Union, and was General of The Mint in 1699.[1]

Balfour Paul writes: He concurred in the revolution. On the 8th July 1691 he had a charter of the Barony of Haltoun under the surname Lauder.[2]

Lauderdale-194 and Maitland-16 appear to represent the same person because: Approximately same birth date, and same year of death, same title, and wife (they will need merging) . Maitland is the family name not Lauderdale and is the most appropriate Last Name at Birth (LNAB)
