Biography

Alexander Maitland was born in 1761 at Templand in Auchterless, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He was a son of Robert Maitland and Margaret Smith. He was baptized on June 30, 1761 at Auchterless Kirk.

Alexander married Margaret Thomson, originally from Turriff, on August 29, 1788 at Culsalmond, Aberdeenshire. Alexander was a farmer.

There was an Alexander Maitland listed as a tenant at Overhill of Blackford on the 1834 Roll of Male Heads of Household. James and Francis Maitland were listed as subtenants. It is presently not known if this was Alexander, born in 1761 or his eldest son, Alexander.

Research Notes

• Recent claims have been made that Alexander died and was buried in 1850 in Aberdeen. The death record for the Alexander W. Maitland (Alexander Watt Maitland) who died and was buried in 1850 at Aberdeen indicates he was a child of 9 months old, not a 90 year old man.
• According to the Ancestral File of the Family History Center of the LDS Church, Robert Maitland, husband of Margaret Smith and father of Alexander, was christened on 24 April 1712 in Auchterless, a son of Adam Maitland. I find this unlikely as he would have been 48 years old at the time of his marriage and the name Adam was not used further in the family. I am much more inclined to believe that Robert was the Robert Maitland who was christened on 10 May 1724, a son of Alexander Maitland, born about 1685.^[1]
