Francis Ward Major was born on 12 August 1840, at Ahmedabad, Bombay, India.[1][2] He was the son of John Philip Major (1806-1840) and Cecilia Burnes (1815-1840).
Francis married Adelaide Forbes (1842-1897) on 6 June 1863, at Exeter, Devon, England.[3][4] They had five children.
