Research Notes

The marriage of Frances Major and William Lea of the 100 acres at Madison's Mill is disputed. She may also not be the mother of James Country Line Lea. This connection is a theory only for further research.

There is no source for Frances Major being the daughter of George Major. There is a source with the day of birth the same as listed above, 19 Nov, but with the correct birth year as recorded in the Parish Registry of St.Peter's Parish, New Kent of 1698. She is clearly the daughter of William Major not George and has siblings named John and Thomas. George Major was a member of the same church as William Lea.

I am standing by the theory that Frances Major who married William Lea was the daughter of William Major and not George Major. No sources have ever surfaced to connect Frances to a father George. There is however, a documented record for Frances Major with father William Major in the same area. I believe that connected Frances to a father George was made strictly on assumption because George Major and William Lea were members of the same church.

I have seen Frances placed as a daughter of George Major for years without sources. They did live in the same area but that alone is not enough proof. I have found a birth record for Frances, daughter of William Major and Elizabeth Mason recorded in St. Peter's Parish Registry, New Kent. It has the date of Frances Major's birth as 19 Nov 1698. I believe this is the right record for Frances Major wife of William Lea. It will not make a lot of people happy to lose the Major line with all the gloss, but if there are no sources for Frances being the daughter of George, then we need to get it corrected. Unfortunately, the record you reference shows a baptism date for Frances, not a birth date, so I'm not sure that supports your case.

William and Francis Major Lea are both alive in 1752 when they sell a piece of land.
