I've done fairly extensive research into the Major Family, as it is my ancestry, going back to Sir Marcus Maijor who was knighted by King Henry VII after taking part in the War of the Roses and was born around 1430. However, as he is listed in several places, most notably Mark Noble's Memoirs of the Protectoral House of Cromwell (1787; Pearson and Rollason), as the Patriarch of the family, I believe the surname may have actually started with Sir Marcus, which leaves the question: Who was he prior to that?
