Mary was born in Sutton, Lancashire, England, on September 16, 1760. (Sutton was a township and ecclesiastical parish, in Prescot Parish, Lancashire. The township is entirely within the county borough of Saint Helens). She was the first of five children of Joseph Makin, a shoemaker, and Mary Howard.
