Biography

Pieter was born on 11 January 1784 in the Wagenmakersvallei, Cabo de Goede Hoop. He was the son of Daniel Malan and Geertruida Marais.[1]

He was baptised on 22 March 1784 in the Dutch Reformed Church of Drakenstein in Paarl. [1]

On 6 February 1806 he married Dorothea Elisabeth Malherbe, in the Dutch Reformed Church of Paarl in Paarl.[2]

On 17 November 1807 the farm Diemersfontein in Dal Josafat was transferred to him as a wedding gift by Dorothea Elisabeth Hertzog. His wife, Dorothea Elisabeth, was her grand child. The farm was 3 morg and 582 square roods in size.[3]

On 3 December 1813 he transferred Diemersfontein to his brother in law, Petrus Johannes Malherbe.[3]

In 1814 he bought the farm Goede Rust in Daljosafat after the death of it's previous owner, Georg Stephanus Hauptfleisch. The farm was 50 morg in size.[4]

It seems that in 1831 he sold Goede Rust since on 20 Jan 1832 Jan Gysbert Hugo became the new owner. [4] Pieter then probably moved to 24 Riviere.

He died on 25 July 1846 at the place of his son, Daniel Petrus, at 24 Riviere. He left household furniture valued at less than £150.[5]

Research notes

  • I could not determine the source of his 11 Jan 1784 date of birth. It might be that a death register has an entry with his exact age from which it was calculated. Danie Malan, 19 Mar 2024.
