John emigrated to Canada arriving from Liverpool to Quebec July 9, 1883. Family stories say that John was a member of the North West Mounted Police for 5 years, however service records indicate he was a member of the 90th Regiment Winnipeg during the time of the North West Rebellion.
Following his retirement from military John Joined the Craig Department Store in Winnipeg, and this is where he met his wife Sara Scott. Following their marriage in 1889 they moved to Brandon Manitoba and opened a dry good store. Two children followed however John had developed T.B. and his health began to fail.
Two of Sara's brothers, William and James had been engineers for the trains in western Canada and had relocated to San Luis Potosi Mexico to take advantage of the boom in the railway business there, one of them wrote to Sara suggesting the hot dry climate in Mexico would be better for John than the cold harsh climate of Manitoba. John, Sara, and children James and Tanys moved to Mexico where Jack (John) opened a Florsheim shoe and boot shop and a Bicycle and dry goods business. The business operated as W.W. Scott & Co. so it is likely that the brothers in law invested in or owned the business. Sara was involved in the day to day operations as Jacks health was not good.
In 1897 son John was born and in 1899 son Harry arrived. 1899 was also a year of shock as Sara's brothers William and James were killed together in a locomotive accident and Jack's health continued to decline, and he died in 1901. His family then returned to Canada.
