Biography

Birth and Parents

John was the son of William Malory[1] and Joan Constable.[2] His birth year is not known. He was probably born in Yorkshire where his father had lands. He was his father's main heir.[3][4]

Marriages and Children

John married for times. His first wife was Margaret Thwaites.[1] Their son was born in about 1498, so they probably married by 1497.[3][4] They had one child:

His second wife was Margaret Hastings.[2] Their marriage date is not known.[3][4] They had one daughter:

Margaret Hastings died before 24 November 1515, when a licence was granted for John's third marriage, to Elizabeth Reade.[2][3][4] The licence was for marriage at the manor house of Over Studley, Yorkshire.[5] They had one son:

Elizabeth Reade died before 29 November 1521, when a licence was issued to the curate of Brayton, Yorkshire for John's marriage to Anne Yorke. On 4 September 1523 a dispensation was issued for their marriage, on account of their consanguinity.[3][4][6] They had one son:

Lands and Life

John inherited property at Studley and Hutton Conyers in Yorkshire.[3][4] In 1524 he paid £4 0s 4d as subsidy (a form of taxation) for his land in Hutton Conyers.[7] In 1516 he was also found to hold land at Nunwick, Yorkshire.[8]

John was a member of the Guild of Corpus Christi, York, Yorkshire.[9]

Death

John died on 23 March 1527/8.[3][4] An Inquisition Post Mortem was held in 20 Henry VIII (1528-1529).[10]

Magna Carta Project

This profile was re-reviewed for the Magna Carta Project by Michael Cayley on 2 April 2022.
John Mallory is in badged trails (reviewed/approved by the Magna Carta Project) from the Batte Gateway Ancestors (Henry and Thomas) and the Mallory Gateways (Roger and Thomas) to Magna Carta Surety Barons Saher de Quincy, Robert de Vere, William d'Aubigny, Robert de Ros and Robert FitzWalter. This profile also appears in a second Richardson-documented trail from the Batte and Mallory Gateways to Saher de Quincy (vol. III, pages 114-123 MALLORY) that was badged by the project in October 2022. All these trails are set out in the Magna Carta Trails section of Henry Batte's profile and in the Magna Carta Trails section of Roger Mallory's profile.
See Base Camp for more information about identified Magna Carta trails and their status. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".

Verified this profile as being on a project-approved trail (from Batte-33 to Quincy or de Vere, following "Magna Carta badged" profiles from Batte-33 to both surety barons). The project account for the Magna Carta Project will be added as a manager later this month to meet WikiTree guidelines (see Help:Project-Managed_Profiles). update: merge completed

Mallory-100 and Mallory-76 appear to represent the same person because: Hi! These are a match. John's birth of about 1473 is from Richardson, which is based on his age in 1499 (26). His wives and children are also from Richardson - Elizabeth being his 3rd wife (license dtd 1515) & mother of his son Christopher (William, b c. 1498, was son of 1st wife). Elizabeth may have been from Studley Roger, but John wasn't (the Mallorys had a manor at Studley Royal, just next to Studley Roger). The marriage could have been at either Studley Roger or Ripon... Richardson doesn't say. (See this G2G discussion for info about Studley Royal & Ripon). Thanks!
