Obituary

Mr. Thomas Malloy

The death of Mr. Thomas Malloy, which we briefly reported in our last issue, removes from our midst a farmer and grazier of the Forbes and Grenfell districts, who was widely respected throughout the two areas.

The deceased, who was born at Yass, in March, 1866, married Miss Bridget Gannon, of Grenfell, 52 years ago, and settled on "Myrtle Vale" property, in the Grenfell district, 35 years ago, where they raised a family of six sons and six daughters. Four or five years ago Mr. Malloy retired and has lived with his wife in Church Street, Forbes, where he collapsed last Wednesday afternoon and passed away before medical aid could be summoned.

Three of his sons died some years ago, the remaining members of the family being: Messrs Patrick Joseph, James Raymond, Albert Michael, all of Caragabal, and Mesdames P. Dean (Jessie), of Punchbowl; A. E. (Myra Anne) and S. P. Dunford (Elizabeth May), T. J. Redfern (Katherine Mary), N. Sheppard (Elsie Bridget), all of Wirrinya) and A. P. Quirk (Patricia Christina), of Garema. There also survives 28 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The deceased was a noted horseman, and was both a rough rider and amateur jockey at bush race meetings. The writer, first met him in 1916, on his "Myrtle Vale" property, where he drew attention to a disease in his crop which afterwards became known as footrot in wheat. When the matter was reported to the city press the Department of Agriculture sent one of its inspectors, Mr. May, to inquire into the unusual occurrence.

Mr. Malloy always had a very fine flock of Merino sheep on his property and was a winner of many prizes at surrounding shows.

The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon to the Catholic portion of the Grenfell cemetery and was largely attended, the last sad rites at the graveside being performed by Rev. Father Quinn.

Mr. A. G. Jones, Forbes, carried out the burial arrangements. [7]
