Biography

Orena Belle was born in Alabama in 1868. She passed away in 1943.

The 1870 Census of Iuka, Tishomingo Co, Mississippi, lists Orena B. Malone (2) with her parents, Mitchell (44, born Alabama) and Elizabeth Malone (31, born N. C.). The five older siblings are: John (21), Mary J.(10), Robert F. (8), Phebe C. (6), and James H. (4) [Assuming John (21) is an older sibling...]. All children, including John were born in Alabama.

The 1880 Census of Upper Lafave, Yell Co, Arkansas, lists Elizabeth Malone as head of the household and farming while her oldest daughter Mary is "keeping house". (Wm Mitchell Malone died about 1877 in Bluffton, Arkansas). Orena is 13. Her siblings are Mary (21), Robert (18), Fuby (16), James (14), George (10), Rosa (7) and Ann (4).

Orena Belle Malone (24) married Leslie Christopher James (25) in Bluffton, Yell Co, Arkansas on 9 Dec 1894.

The 1900 Census of Hill Co, Texas lists Belle M. (32) with her husband Leslie James (30) and daughter Stella (1, born Texas).

The 1910 Census of Fort Worth, Tarrant Co, Texas lists L. C. James (40, born Tennessee) with wife Bell (41, born Alabama) and children Stella (11) and Leslie (9), both born in Texas.

The 1920 Census of Fort Worth, Tarrant Co, Texas lists L. C. James (50), wife Belle (51), and two children, Stella (20), Leslie (18), and Leslie's cousin, Maud (34).

The 1930 Census of Dallas, Dallas Co, Texas lists Belle O. James (52, born in Alabama) in a household with her daughter, Avie S. Proctor (32), and grandchildren Orena R. Proctor (8), and Annie S. Proctor (6).

The 1940 Census of Hays Co, Texas lists Orena B. James (71) in a household with her daughter Avie Stella Woodall (41) and new son-in-law, Howard Woodall (54, an Army veteran working as Assistant Postmaster, salary $2500). Children in the household are Clara E. Woodall (4), Orena R. Proctor (18), and Anna W. Proctor (16). Orena Belle stated she lived in Dallas, so presumably was only visiting her daughter at the time of the 1940 Census. Husband Howard Woodall is found in Dallas in the 1930 Census, so presumably he remarried the widow Avie Stella James and left his Dallas job with the "Veteran Bureau" to take the job of Assistant Postmaster in Hays County between 1930 and 1940 .

A Texas death certificate shows she was born 22 May 1868 in Alabama, and died at age 74 on 17 Jan 1943 in Dallas, Dallas Co, Texas. Her parents are listed as Wm. M. Malone and Elizabeth Crowell Malone.
