OLD LADY BURNT TO DEATH. (1917, May 1). The Tumut Advocate and Farmers and Settlers' Adviser (NSW : 1903 - 1925), p. 2. Retrieved July 8, 2018, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article112267977 OLD LADY BURNT TO DEATH A SAD burning fatality occurred at the residence of Mrs Eliza Perfect, Bago, on Thursday night. Mrs Jones (mother of Mr William Jones, of Batlow, and Mr Walter Jones, of Bago) resided with Mrs Perfect and Mrs Alice Feel. She slept in a room adjoining theirs. During the night the two latter were aroused from their sleep by flames from Mrs Jones room bursting into theirs. They tried to force the door unavailingly as it was barred by something on the inside, and being a wooden house the fire spread with such rapidity that they were forced by the heat out of the building, which was destroyed, with all its contents. The charred remains of the old lady, who was 87 years of age, were afterwards recovered from the ashes. Mrs Jones was in town as late as Tuesday last, and returned home in good health. The fire is believed to have been occasioned quite accidentally,Deceased was also mother of Mrs Thomas Cram (West Australia), Mrs Hicks and Mrs Robert Hartnett. Rev Mr. Sharkey journeyed to Bago on Sunday to officiate at the burial. The funeral was attended by all the countryside, where deceased had resided for upwards of 50 years.
