Biography

There is a James Maltbie who was a laborer in the home of A.W. Holland in Hog Mountain, Gwinnett County, Georgia in the 1880 census. Could that be Mariah's brother? Mariah's son Charles J. Terrell, was the second husband of Nancy Camsada (Sadie) Hall Sizemore. The Terrells, Halls and Sizemores were neighbors in the Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County, Georgia census in 1880. Sadie was first married to George Washington Sizemore in the 1880's after his wife Frances passed away. She married Charlie Terrell in about 1902. James (Jimmy Hall) had a son named Charles Colquitt Hall. In the 1880's, he married Elizabeth Strickland. Their marriage was found by me in a persons of color Blue Horse notebook in Gwinnett Probate Records. The Gwinnett Historical Society has published a corrected marriages collection that includes the folks whose marriages were placed in this book. There is an Elizabeth Strickland listed as a "freedman" in the home of A.W. Holland circa 1800-1883 in the Georgia Property Tax Digests (new to ancestry.com). I believe she may be Elizabeth "Eliza B." Strickland, wife of Charles Colquitt "Charley" Hall in the 1900 Hall County census. Charley and Eliza had one child who lived, Ruby Elizabeth Hall. She was my grandmother. I am thinking that Charley met Eliza through the Terrells somehow. Eliza was mixed - part white, part black, part native american. I have been unable to find her father, Mr. Strickland. Her mother may have been Mary Emmeline Bolton, daughter of Joseph Henry and Priscilla Bolton of Pinckneyville - see 1870 census there. Emmeline is last seen in the 1880 census. Maybe she died and her daughter went to work for Mr. Holland, then met Charley Hall and married in 1887. Any info you can give me would be appreciated. I am overjoyed to have hopefully found Elizabeth in the Holland home!

James Maltbie seen in Mr. Holland's 1880 household seems to be a relative of Mariah. However, due to his age, he must be a nephew or other relative besides her brother. There is a Widow Harriett Maltbie in the Hog Mountain census very near Mr. Holland. Who is she in relation to Mariah, and could this be the source of James?

Also very near Mr. Holland in the 1880 census is my grandmother's grandmother's brother, Wilburn L. Lott. It could be that his nephew, my great-grandfather Charley Hall, visited with WL and met Elizabeth Strickland in the process.

Charley and Elizabeth (Eliza) and their daughter, my grandmother Ruby Hall, were in Flowery Branch farming in 1900. Archibald Holland owned property in Flowery Branch, and I am thinking Charley was on that land with his brothers Randolph and Paul farming. The land suffered a tremendous drought during that time, as well as boll weevils. Elizabeth left the home about 1900 and was never heard from again. - Pat Gresham

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
