Biography

Birth and Family

Said in 1839 to have been 11 years old, as their father Louis' affidavit shows:

"Peter Monagre a male Infant of about the age of Twenty.

Josette Monagre a female infant of about the age of Sixteen

Jane Monagre a female infant of about the age of fourteen

Charles Monagre a male infant of about the age of eleven

Your Petitioner avers that the Mother of the aford children was a half Breed Winnebago Woman being the daughter of Chau wau cau a Winnebago Squaw and that the mother of the said children has died four years ago. That your Petitioner has his aford children now living with & supported by him and that he is a discreet and prudent Parent. Your Petitioner avers the performance of valuable & important services being rendered by his dead wife & children to the Winnebago Nation of Indians." (Waggoner, 44b)

Marriage

His first marriage was to Mary Ann, whose maiden name is not know at present. Judging from the birth date of their eldest son Frank, they were probably married in 1852 in Minnesota Territory. She died young on 10 Feb 1869, aged 38.

His second marriage was to Mary Louise. Given that their first child was born in July 1870, they must have married the same year (1869) in which his first wife had died.

1865 Minnesota State census shows the following people living with Charles Menaige:

Birth dates have been supplied from other sources. Aaron, Sophie, and Mary Ann are likely the children of Mary Ann Menaige, which would imply that she had been married to a Mr. Foyles before she had married Charles Menaige.

1880 Minnesota State census shows the children of Charles and his second wife Mary Louise:

It appears that Joseph died in childhood.

Land

Congressional records show that Charles held land in McPherson, Blue Earth County: Township 107 South, Range 25 East, Section 17, N ½ of NW ¼. This is near land owned by his brother Peter. (House Doc. 186)

Residence

1857 — his family was living on the Winnebago Agency in Blue Earth County, Minnesota Territory.

1860 — the family was living in Mankato, Blue Earth, Minnesota. They had three laborers living with them, one of whom was born in France.

1895 — he and his family lived at 88 West Fairfield Ave., St. Paul, Minnesota. (1895 census)

1910 — when he was 83, he was living with his son Frank L. Manaige in Perry Precinct, Thurston County, Nebraska. (1920 census)

Death

He died on 27 Jan 1916 (aged 88) in Saint Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota, USA, and is buried at Section 57, Block 1, Lot 8, Grave 1 in Calvary Cemetery, Saint Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota, USA. (Find a Grave)
