(Aug 1943). FLGT-LIEUT. W. G. MANIFOLD AWARDED D.F.C. For Skill, Courage, Tenacity Over Enemy Industrial Plant ADVICE has been received by Mr and Mrs John Manifold, "Purrumbete" Weerite, that their son, Flgt-Lieut. W. G. Manifold, has received an immediate award of the Distinguished Flying Cross.

FLGT-LIEUT. Manifold is pilot and captain of a Lancaster bomber in a R.A.A.F. squadron stationed in Britain. He left Australia, nearly two years ago, and after training in Canada went to England. He has taken part in 30 raids over Germany, was in the raid on the Skoda works and others over Italy.

CITATION. The citation for his award reads: "Fight-Lieut. Manifold and Sergt. Brown were pilot and bomb aimer, respectively, of an aircraft detailed to attack an enemy industrial plant on a night in July, 1943. Visibility was poor in the vicinity of the target but, displaying great persistence, Fight.-Lieut. Manifold flew over the area for some considerable time, until the precise objective could be identified.

"Despite fighter interference, he flew into the attack and Sergt. Brown released the bombs with accuracy. Both members of the aircraft crew displayed skill, courage and tenacity."


(Jan 1944). Bar To D.F.C. For Sq.-Leader W. G. Manifold. Mr and Mrs John Manifold have been informed by the Minister for Air that Sqr./Leader W. G. Manifold, D.F.C, has been awarded a bar to his D.F.C, for further gallant service. The citation is not yet to hand.


(Jan 1944). ENGAGEMENT (1) NOTICE. MANIFOLD—CRANE.—Squadron-Leader William Grey Manifold D.F.C. and Bar (R.A.A.F.), youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. John Manifold, Purrambete, Victoria, to Henrietta Margaret, daughter of Captain H. B. Crane (R.N.) and Mrs. Crane, White Lodge, Fareham, England.


(Dec 1945). RECEPTION FOR SON AND DAUGHTER. A DELIGHTFUL At Home to welcome their son, F. L,. W. C. Manifold, D.F.C. and Bar, and in honor of their daughter, Marigold, was given at Grosvenor, Toorak, on Wednesday light, by Mr and Mrs John Manifold, "Purrumnbete," Weerite. The guests numbered more than 100. Lovely flowers were grouped about the reception room, the front lounge being decorated with Christmas lilies and hydrangeas and the other one with shaded gladioli. On the stairway gladoili and delphiniunms made vivid splashes of color and in the dining room sweet peas were mingled with maiden hair fern. Miss Manifold, who, after working in munitions and at the Royal Melbourne Hospital during the war years and who has now returned to her home, wore a simply-made frock of, white matt crepe.


(Mar 1952). ENGAGEMENT (2) ANNOUNCEMENT. Engaged: Of wide country and town interest is the engagement announced between Helen Cynthia, youngest daughter of Mr, Gerald Roberts, Horsington Grange, Templecombe, Somerset, England, and the. late Mrs. Roberts, and William Grey, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. John Manifold, Purrumbete, Weerite. They met in England last year. Miss Roberts, who arrived in Australia, a few weeks ago, is at present staying with Mr. and Mrs. John Manifold at Purrumbete. They plan to be married towards the end of April, after which they will make their home at Purrumbete. Mr. Manifold served with the R.A.A.F. during the war and flew as a Pathfinder bomber captain. He was awarded the D.F.C. and bar.

The engagement is announced between Helen Cynthia, youngest daughter of Mr. Gerald Roberts, Horsington Grange, Templecombe, Somerset, England, and the late Mrs. Roberts, and William Grey, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. John Manifold, Purrumbete, Weerite.

WEDDING REPORT. English Bride. At St. Paul's Church, Camperdown, the marriage was celebrated on Saturday of Helen Cynthia, youngest daughter of Mr. Gerald Roberts, of Horsington Grange, Templecombe, Somerset, England, and the late Mrs. Roberts, with William Gray, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. John Manifold, of Purumbete, Weerite. Canon Burgess officiated. The bride wore a simply cut gown of white and gold brocade which was misted with her tulle veil. She carried white lilies. Mrs. John Paine was matron of honor. Her long-sleeved gown was of white grosgrain. In her hair was a wreath of green leaves and she carried white hyacinths and green hydrangeas. Mr. John Paine was best man. A reception was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Manifold.
