Biography

Christine Delaney Manley was born in Franklin County, GA about 1817 to Moses Manley and Delaney (Laney) Attaway Manley.

Christine married John Wallace around 1836 when she was about 19 years old. They lived near Canon, Ga which is on the Franklin and Hart County line. Their first child was Francis Marion Wallace born July 12, 1938. They had seven children, 5 boys and 2 girls. Their youngest daughter, Nancy Milly Wallace was born Nov 15, 1855.

Christine Wallace (age 36) appears on the Franklin County, GA 1850 Census with her husband John (age 36) and her oldest 4 children. The 1850 Census was the first Census to list a man`s family by name. Christine Wallace does not appear on the 1860 Census. That means that Christine died somewhere between late 1855 and early 1860. Christine was close to 40 years old when her youngest child was born in Nov of 1855. She may have died from complications of her daughter`s delivery or complications from her next pregnancy. Christine`s death left her husband, John Wallis with a house full of young children in the most dangerous time in our nation`s history. The Civil war began in 1861. John Wallace married Louvinda Ann Pearman Mitchell in 1864. Louvinda had lost her husband in the war in the Summer of 1862.

Christine Manley Wallace lived to be about 40 years old. Although, it appears that Christine and her family were members of Double Branches Church at the time of Christine`s death, no engraved grave stone exist there to mark her grave. John and Christine`s youngest daughter, Nancy Milly Wallace Chastain is one of the earliest burials in that cemetery with an engraved grave stone. Nancy Milly Wallace Chastain died April 22, 1879. Christine may have been buried in Double Branches Church Cemetery and the grave marked with a field stone, but I feel that it is likely that Christine Wallace was buried on John Wallace`s farm so that their children would have easy access to her grave. When John Wallace died in 1885, he would have likely been buried beside her.
