Mary Kathleen was born in Jansenville, Cape Colony on 4 January 1910; she was the daughter of David James Manley and Elizabeth Ellen Johanna (Carelse) Manley.

She was 18 years old when she married 28-year-old SA Railways Engine Driver Stanley Ernest Mundell in the Cape Province on 3 February 1928.^[1]
