Private John Mann served with 5th Massachusetts Regiment (1777), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

The Battle of Rhode Island, also known as the Battle of Quaker Hill had already taken place when John Mann like many other continental soldiers from New Hampshire enlisted. While living in Hampton, New Hampshire he enlisted in the Newburyport, Massachusetts State Troops under the command of Captain Jeremiah Putnam's Company, Col. Nathan Tyler's Regiment July 28, 1779. <1. Revolutionary Soldiers Buried in Indiana (1949)...> John joined the regiment at Providence Rhode Island and remained there until the British Invasion withdrew the continental soldiers into the interior of the mainland. John reinlisted again in 1781 while he was living in Hampton, New Hampshire. <1. Revolutionary Soldiers Buried in Indiana (1949)...> John Mann married Persia (Stratton) Mann on the 05 March 1797, in Pawlett, Rutland Co., Vermont. In 1799 John resided in Hamilton, Ohio. He also resided in Franklin, Indiana around 1830. John Mann died on the 29 of April, 1849 in Warren County, Indiana. Among the people at the funeral were Ormon Mann and Mary Vanblaricum (possibly the daughter of John Vanblaricum who was one of the first settlers in Indiana) John Mann was buried at Otwell Chapel, White Water Twp., Franklin County, Indiana. The children of Mann passed down the story of how the Mann name was from near the Irish Sea.
