Biography

Jacob Mann was born in 1802 in Nicholas County, Kentucky, United States. He may have been the son of Peter Mann and Barbara (Jones) Mann.

On 6 Feb 1826, Jacob posted bond along with Arthur Peyton and obtained a license to marry Elizabeth Peyton.[1][2] Jacob and Elizabeth were married on 9 Feb 1826 by John Rogers in Nicholas County.[3][4]

In 1830 Jacob was listed in the federal census in Nicholas County. His household included one male and one female 20-30, with two children in the home: one male and one female under 5. No slaves were listed in the household.[5]

Elizabeth died before 1835. On 21 Apr 1835 Jacob Mann posted bond along with Samuel Peyton and obtained a license to marry Mary Peyton, also a daughter of Stephen Peyton. They were married 21 April 1835 in Nicholas County, Kentucky. [6][7] They were married by John Doughty in Nicholas County on 22 Apr 1835.[8][9]

In 1840 Jacob appeared in the federal census in Nicholas County. His household contained one male and one female 30-40. Children in the household included one male and one female 10-15 and one male 5-10. The first two and possibly the third would possibly have been children of Jacob and Elizabeth Peyton. Two males and one female under 5 could be children of Jacob and Mary Peyton. There were no slaves in the household.[10]

After 1846 Jacob and Mary moved their family to Cooper County, Missouri. They appeared there in the 1850 census. Jacob (48) farmed land valued at $1000. His household included Mary (43) and inferred children Peter (22, farmer), Morris (18), Amanda (14, attended school), Jesse (12, attended school), Thomas (11, attended school), Columbus (9, attended school), Mary (8, attended school), and John (6). All members of the household were reported as born in Kentucky.[11]

Possible children with Elizabeth Peyton

  • Peter (1828)
  • Phoebe? (1830)
  • Morris (1832)

Possible children with Mary Peyton

  • Amanda (1836)
  • Jesse (1838)
  • Thomas (1839)
  • Columbus (1841)
  • Mary (1842)
  • John (1844)[12]

Jacob apparently died before 1860: Mary appeared alone in the census at that time with several of the above children, still in Cooper County, Missouri.[13]

Research Notes

  • Mahathalam (Mann) Barnett (1824-1907) and Elias Mann (abt.1829-1907) have been suggested as children of Jacob and Elizabeth Mann. So far no records have been found to corroborate this.
  • Other researchers have suggested that Jacob and Mary had a son David Mann, and three daughters; Mary, Catherine and Angeline. Angeline Mann married Isaac Setters. However, these children do not appear to correspond to this Jacob and Mary Mann. Mary appeared in the 1860 and 1870 census in Cooper County, Missouri with corresponding children to those listed above.

Mann-11276 and Mann-4668 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, dates, locations - daughter Catherine is named in profile of Mann-4668 and attached to Mann-11276
posted by Jillian Kern
Hi Jillian,

I just recently adopted the Mann-4668 profile and have not had the chance to review/verify the information on it, or confirm the children listed. However, Mann-11276 cannot represent the same individual because Mann-4668 married a second time in 1835 to Mary Peyton, implying that his first wife Elizabeth Peyton was deceased. The daughter of Mann-11276, Catherine Mann, married Aaron Setters with the written consent of her mother Elizabeth Davis in 1850: both women appear in the 1850 census of Elizabeth (unknown) Mann Davis's husband, Jared Davis. Divorce was not impossible, but is pretty unlikely in the 1830's. I have not been able to find a marriage record for Elizabeth the mother of Catherine, nor any record naming Catherine's Mann father. Given that there are no sources on Mann-11276, I think the merge should be rejected until a source for the father of Catherine (Mann-9782) is found, or she is disconnected from Mann-11276. It is very unlikely that Mann-4668 is the father of the Catherine Mann that married Aaron Setters.

Mann-4675 and Mann-4668 appear to represent the same person because: they have the same birth date and same father. They are duplicates and should be merged.
Mann-4668 and Mann-4675 appear to be the same. Maybe you should merge them?
