Biography

Catherine M. Mann, daughter of John and Elizabeth Hauck Mann who were natives of Mt. Bethel, Pennsylvania, was born July 4, 1822 in Hampton Co., Pennsylvania. She married John H. Brewer October 1, 1842 in Northampton, PA.[1] The 1850 U.S. Federal Census records John Brewer, a 30 year old carpenter as head of family #34 with Catherine age 27 living in Hamilton Township, Monroe Co., PA. In their household are Elizabeth age 7, James H. age 5, Caroline age 1 and an 11 year old boy named Christian Mann. All were born in Pennsylvania.[2] On March 21, 1857 John and Catherine Brewer and their family arrived in Louisa Co., Iowa. He rented a farm in the Elm Grove Township near Spring Run.[3]

The 1860 U.S. Federal Census lists John H. Brewer, a farmer age 40, and Catherine M. age 38 as family #185 living in Elm Grove Township, Louisa Co. Iowa. There are 7 children in the household: Elisabeth age 16, James H. age 14, Caroline age 12, Daniel K. age 10, Matilda A. age 8, Sophia A. age 5 and Emma J. age 2.[4] The 1870 U.S. Federal Census records that "John H. Bruer," a farmer age 50 born in PA, and Catherine M., age 47 born in PA, are family #48 living in Elm Grove Township, Louisa Co., Iowa. There are 6 children in the household: Daniel K. age 19 born in PA, Matilda age 17 born in PA, Sophia A. age 14 born in PA, Emma J. age 12 born in IA, Mary L. age 6 born in IA, and Annie E. age 4 born in IA.[5] The 1880 U.S. Federal Census records C.M. Brewer, age 57 born in PA, living in family #38 in Elm Grove Township, Louisa Co., Iowa with her husband J.H. Brewer, 2 children M.E. age 16 and Anna E. age 14, and grandson J.S. Barrington age 6.[6]
