Biography

According to 1854 Jefferson County, Tennessee marriage records, a Robert Mann married Catherine "Kess", though some researches wonder if her last name wasn't actually Eckles, somehow morphing into "Kess" due to the 2nd syllable of Eckles (often spelled Echols). Catherine Mann was living with a family and her Mann children as of 1860 in Tennessee. There was an "R Mann" in jail in Nashville, Davidson County, TN at the time, whose age and place of birth are good matches for Robert Mann. By 1870, Robert and Catherine were in the same household in Greene County, Tennessee, and also together on the 1880 census of DeLoche, Hot Spring County, Arkansas.

Catherine Mann was murdered in her home, in the first week of January, 1885, apparently a robbery victim. 2 men were arrested for the crime, with one being some type of young Mann relative (the newspaper article appeared to be contradictory as to the relationship - it referred to the suspect as a grandson of Phillip Mann, Robert's brother, but that seems questionable due to the age of Phillip's sons. The article also described the suspect as a "stepson" of Catherine, which could be possible only if Robert had an unknown son prior to his marriage to Catherine). Thomas Hanly was the other suspect who was arrested.

After the murder of his wife Catherine in January, 1885, Robert remarried to Tennessee Davis Ewing, the widow of WP Ewing. Robert died around 1888, as his widow Tennessee "Mans" remarried to Casil Loy (probably born Caswell Loy). Tennessee Loy, her husband, and 2 of her Loy children died in a major smallpox outbreak in early 1895 in the Hot Springs, Arkansas area. Her only surviving children were an Ewing daughter and 2 Mann sons, apparently Andrew Jackson "MANS" and William David Mann. These 2 Mann boys have not been found yet on the 1900 census, but do appear from 1910 on for several decades. Andrew J's birth certificate was issued in the 1940s, and listed his parents as "Bob Mans" and "Tennice Davis". The year listed was 1885, but that might be wrong, as the Mann/Davis marriage is listed as 1886. The Arkansas birth certificate had some minor errors; such as having "Bob's" age far off, as he was much older than Tennessee Davis Ewing. This application had the signature of Andrew J Man's brother in law. Both Andrew J (born 1885) and William David (born 1887) gave a daughter the name Tennie.

Based on the 1900 census, it is also possible that there was a 3rd Mann son, though one local account in the Hot Springs area mentioned only 2 Mann sons. A James R Mann could have been a son of Robert, born between 1880 and 1890. He would only be a son of Tennie Davis is born closer to 1890 than 1880. (James R appeared on the 1900 census as the 20-year old brother of John W Mann, who is thought to have been the John W Mann who was born around 1854, the son of Robert and Catherine Mann. If not, it created a confusing record in the Hot Springs area census.

Robert Mann's brother Phillip Mann was murdered on FEB 3, 1884 in Malvern, AR, supposedly by William O Diffie, against whom Phillip Mann was to testify in court. Diffie was a young saloon keeper in the area, as of the 1880 census.
