Biography

Born in Steuben County, New York.[1] on 14 March 1840.

1840: His father and mother are listed as living in Erwin NY with 3 boys under 10 and 1 girl under 10 in the household. Free Colored Persons.

1850: age 14, Living with his parents (Children: Reuben, Susan, Samuel, William, Catherine, Oscelia, Alic, Frederick, Hellen) in Erwin NY. Race: Mulatto[2]

1855: age 19: living with his parents (Children: Reuben, Susan, Samuel, William, Catherine, Auselia, Alice, Frederick, Alonzo) in Erwin NY. Race: Mulatto[3]

1860:

In the Civil War Draft Records of 1 Jul 1863, Samuel P. Mann is listed as living in Erwin NY, age 25, race colored, occupation farmer, birthplace NY, unmarried. His brothers William H. Mann (age 23) and Reuben T Mann (age 28) also registered at that time. [4]

In 1880, Samuel Mann (age 41) was living at 158 Tioga Avenue in Corning NY with his wife, Josephine, and their five children: Minnie (12), Josephine (10), Edith (6), William (4), and Samuel D (born in February). His mother-in-law, Mary Bogardus (age 50), was also living with them. Samuel's occupation is carpenter. All the family are classified as Mulatto and all were born in NY state, as were their parents.

On 15 Oct 1885, "Samuel P. Mann was appointed a special policeman for the protection of the Salvation Army."[5]

He is buried in Hope Cemetery in Corning, along with his wife, Josephine A.[6]
