Note: Silas was born to Jemima Manning before her marriage to William Stewart. It is believed he was an illegitimate child, unless Manning was not Jemima's maiden name. (Karen Pinkerton-Tatro, a descendant of Silas Manning, says family memory has said Silas was illegitimate).
1850 CENSUS: Silas is living in Spring Creek Township (Miami county, Ohio) with his wife and children. Also living with them was Silas's two half-brothers, John and Charles.
Silas moved to Wabash county, Indian in 1854. Wabash county is where his half-brother William Stewart was living. William sent a letter to Silas in May 1852 encouraging him to sell his farm and come buy the Isaac Case farm which ajoined the grist mill that William Stewart was operating in Wabash county, Indiana. That letter still exists and is in the possession of Karen Pinkerton-Tatro.
