JONATHAN MANNING, b. at Billerica, 16 Jul 1749 son of William Manning and Elizabeth Danforth;[1] Jonathan d. at Chelmsford, 8 Apr 1828;[2][3] m. at Chelmsford, 17 Mar 1774,[4] MARTHA HOWARD, b. at Chelmsford, 18 Jun 1750 daughter of Benjamin and Martha (Poor) Howard;[5] Martha d. at Chelmsford, 10 Nov 1809.[6]
Martha and Jonathan resided in Chelmsford. Jonathan was an innkeeper which had a tavern. He built a large colonial building at Town Farm which was used as a hostelry.[7] Jonathan also kept a farm.
On 12 September 1823, Jonathan Manning, yeoman of Chelmsford, in consideration of four thousand dollars, conveyed to Joseph Manning, gentleman of Chelmsford, several tracts in Chelmsford with all the buildings. The main property contained 49 acres and two smaller pieces totaled six acres.[8]
Probate Records
Jonathan Manning did not leave a will, and Benjamin Chamberlain was named administrator of his estate on 20 May 1828 at the request of heirs Jonathan Manning, Ephraim Walker, Salathiel Manning, Lydia Manning, Joseph Manning, and Lucina M. Adams.[9]
Daughter Lydia did not marry. In her will written 30 April 1841, she made bequests to brothers Jonathan Manning and Joseph Manning and her nieces and nephews as follows: Ephraim Walker, Elmira Walker, Benjamin M. Walker, Martha M. Newman, Mary Walker (who are children of her sister Martha); Walter H. Manning, Otis Manning, John H. and Caroline Manning minor children of nephew Benjamin Manning deceased (who are children of brother Jonathan); Susan Manning, Maryantha Manning, Benjamin F. Manning (children of Salathiel); Lucinda M. Parkhurst (daughter of sister Mehitable); Martha H. Chamberlain, Asenath M. Chamberlain (children of sister Asenath); Julia E. Manning, and Jane H. Manning (children of brother Joseph).[10]
