Hester was born in Georgia, likely in Walker County[1] on 20 October 1859 to parents George Manning[2] and Elizabeth Ann (Unknown).[3]
The 1860 US census[1] shows Hester at an age of 8 months living in Walker County, Georgia and it is very likely that she was born there. However, on her death certificate, her place of birth is listed as Tullahoma, Tennessee. The discrepancy is most likely the result of her daughter Laura's early death. Laura's daughter Virgie Ulmer is listed on the death certificate as the reporting party. Laura died in 1929 when Virgie was only 14 years old. As the eldest child and her father working full time, Virgie stepped up into the role of home-maker and child caretaker. When her grandmother died eight years later, Virgie filed the death certificate paperwork. At an early age it is possible that Virgie did not know that her grandmother was born in Georgia and may have just assumed that she was born in Tennessee.
Hester's parents migrated from Georgia to Tennessee sometime between 1860 and 1870. They appeared on the in the 1860 US census in Georgia[1] and in Tennessee in the 1870 census.[4] The Tullahoma Historic Society's genealogy compilation, "Tullahoma, 1851," has a quizzical entry about Hester's father and it must be assumed that their record is conflated or in error:
The first sentence is most likely a conflation of George Manning and Thomas Mullins; the Mullins family came from Virginia. Walter was born in 1861, if he was born in Georgia, the family would have come to Tennessee between 1862 and 1869. Hester's father "George" appears in the book and in census records as John, George, and William. It is not known if the census records are in error or if he alternately went by his given name, middle name, and a nickname. Ringgold is near Town, Walker, Georgia, this entry appears accurate. If the entry about the sons dying in the Civil War is correct, their records have not been found; they were not living with George and Elizabeth and they were not on the same census page.
Hester married, Anderson Richardson Mullins on 30 April 1874 in Moore County, Tennessee. The license was signed by Anderson and W. H. Hall.[5]
Between the births of daughters Isabel and Laura, the family appeared on the 1880 US census in Lynchburg, Moore County, Tennessee. No other records for Hester have been found until the 1900 census where they are living still in Moore County, Tennessee[12] (Note: there are many Cobb cousins on the same census page and brother-in-law William Manly Mullins appears on the next page).
By 1910, Hester and Anderson had moved to Italy, Texas[13] living alongside the entire extended family: next door, daughter Laura, her husband Clyde and their two daughters, cousins John and Nina Sims, and one door over, daughter Isabel, her husband Leroy Van Reeder, and their seven children. It is not known why the whole family moved to Texas; it is possible that they moved for employment opportunities. Sims relatives were from Texas and may have invited them. Their daughter Isabel's family had arrived to Texas earlier; her daughter Ester was born in Texas in 1904.
We do not know what year Hester and Anderson returned to Tennessee but their granddaughter Virgie (Laura's daughter) was born in Italy, Texas in 1914.[14] By the 1920 census,[15] Hester and Anderson had returned to Moore County, Tennessee accompanied by their daughter Laura, her husband Clyde, their children, and other extended members of the Ulmer family. Hester and Anderson were sharing a home with Laura, Clyde, and their children Ruby and Virgie.
By 1930, Anderson and Hester can be found living in the home of daughter and son-in-law Laura and Clyde Ulmer along with their daughter Virgie in Tullahoma, Tennessee. Ruby appears on the same census page, married to Ed Carter, probably a relative from the Carter family. The young couple has a child: G. C.[16] This is the last record found (to date) of Hester and Anderson before they died in 1937.
