Disputed Origins And Lineage

Richard Manning was the father of Gatsie (Manning) Fortner. The residence section below details the locations that he was believed to have lived in. As there was more than one Richard Manning in that area during his lifetime more research needs to be done to determine which records belong to this Richard Manning. Also, this Richard may be Gatsey's Grandfather, not father. A search for correct lineage is underway. Research Notes

  • The land patent for 1852 may have been for a son Richard, a grandson Richard, or a family member that Richard bought property for before moving to Georgia. This Richard would have been seventy-eight at the time and there is a Richard Manning that was appointed Constable of Lowndes County on 1 May 1852. • There was a Richard Manning that died in Chowan county, North Carolina in 1752. He died intestate and his probate (an Ancestry record) was filed by Sarah Champion.

Logistics and details for a Richard Puckett, Jr., in Gwinnett Co, GA
Please use caution to avoid conflation. There was a Richard Manning (Sr.) b:1780 located in 1850 Diamonds, DeKalb Co, GA. He likely was in Newton Co, GA, in 1830. Diamonds was on the border of Gwinnett and Newton Counties at the time. For consideration, there were Mannings, Pucketts, and Nibletts living near each other in an area that was on the county lines of Gwinnett, DeKalb, and Newton counties. Several won land in the lottery while residing in "Maguires", which was in Rockbridge, in southern Gwinnett County. 1839 map

  • 1840 Census in Gwinnett Co, GA
    • Richard Maning; Male 20-29, Female 20-29, two Males Under 5. He is presumed to be "Richard Manning, Jr." who was residing in Maguire, Gwinnett Co, GA, and won land in 16th District, 1st Section of Cherokee. His lot #188 was near Brass Town, Union Co, GA.[8] On the 1840 Census, Richard Manning was listed two pages away from Richard Puckett and several other Pucketts known to be located in Rockbridge.
