Biography

"The Eighteen Century Documents of the Nine Partners Patent", show the appointment of Charles Manning to the Overseers of Highways at the 1802 town meeting, and the Manning property evaluations and assessments on the 1801 tax list.

Jonathan Davidson, over at Find A Grave (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/123116975) thinks that the first wife, ____ Tompkins, lived until about 1777 (the year that Caleb was born) and ascribes to her these children: Children 1st Marriage: Sarah Manning Conklin b. 1766, died 1817 * in Father Will Charles Manning II b. 1771, died 1847 * in Father Will + Find a Grave Memorial ID 111421277 Samuel Manning b. 1773 * in Father Will John L. Manning b. 1775 died 1865 * in Father Will + Find a Grave Memorial ID 82146446 Caleb Manning born about 1777, died 1847 in Fathers Will + Find a Grave Memorial ID 129995140

He finds thirteen children in all, twelve of them in Charles's will.

The above link is to a book, online and readable, 1938 Yearbook of the Dutchess County Historical Society, in which Charles Manning's home is mentioned on page 39, and on the same page is Caleb Tompkins.

The will of Charles Manning, probated 1810 is viewable in 2 pages, and this is the link: https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/new-york-abstracts-of-wills-admins-and-guardianships-1787-1835/image/?volumeId=6890&pageName=1385&rId=557238

The will names his final wife, Elsie, and names his children and his daughter's husband's surnames. Gwen Mechum Hunt transcribed the will. I have scanned copies of the 2 page will and I can send them to anyone who wants to see them.

Charles Manning was born 2 Mar 1743 in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess county.[1] At present (10/2016) there is no documentation for the parents attached here. Charles Manning married three times.[2] He married, first, _____ Tompkins the daughter of Caleb and Martha Tompkins,[3] second, by 1787 (if the list of children at Find A Grave is correct, then by 1779)[4], Mehetebel Lewis[5] and third, by 1805, Elcea Griffin. (On April 2, 1795 Charles Manning and Martha of Clinton conveyed 70 acres of land next to their property.[6] Perhaps this is an error for John Manning whose wife was Martha.)

In Benjamin Haviland's survey of the Hype Park properties he describes the location of the Manning farm.

We are now to the 5th lot of the Great Nine Partners.
The fork of the road is debatable, as Crum Elbow and Cream street. In early times this was the Simeon Wood farm, now owned by Mr. Roosevelt.
Evidently Charles Manning Sr., occupied land in the immediate section. It was on this farm, near a rock back of the President's cottage, that Charles, Jr., hid the silver and valuables from a marauding party in the Revolution. His father was in the service at the time that Kingston was burned. They searched the house, ran a bayonet through a bed where there was a sleeping child--fortunately the child was uninjured. It was here that the Mannings entertained William and Eunice Cooley Todd, refugees form the Wyoming massacre. Their son, John, married Manning's daughter, Martha, and son, David, married the daughter of Harmon Van Benschoten. They were the ancestors of the Todd families of Hyde Park.[7]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Charles by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Charles:
