Mary Jane MANNING was born on October 14, 1836 in Port Allegany, McKean, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Harvey Peter Manning and Betsey Grimes. Sometime after her husband’s death in 1907 Mary Jane moved to Pinelake Twsp, Cass, MN probably to live with her son George Frank and his wife Mary. Mary Jane died on September 26, 1922. She was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Walker, Cass, MN. Mary Jane’s obituary follows: Mary J. Case Passes Away Dies at the Pine Lake Home of Old Age at 86 Years Funeral Thursday
Grandma, Mary Jane Case died Sunday morning, at the home of her son, George F. Case, in Pine Lake Township, of old age. The funeral services were held Thursday, from the Community Church, in Walker, with Rev. Geo. Michael officiating, and the remains laid to rest in Evergreen cemetery, to which place they were escorted by a large number of sorrowing friends. Mary Jane Case was born at Port Allegany, Pennsylvania, in the year 1836. She was married to J. Franklin Case at Pottsville, Pa., when 18 years old and a year later moved to LaCrosse, Wis., where they lived until 1879, and during which time four children had been born to them, two girls and two boys, and Mr. Case had served four years in the Civil War, from Sept.,’61 to Sept. ’65. In 1879, they moved to Cottonwood County, Minn., and two years later they moved to Wilder, Jackson Co., where they were in the hotel business until 1910, when Mr. Case died and the then lonely mother came to Cass County to make her home with her son C. H. Case. She took a homestead in Pine Lake Township, upon which they lived for several years but finally moved to Walker where Mr. Case had built a home. Geo. F. Case had purchased and moved into the homestead at Pine Lake and Grandma Case had been spending the past summer there but was making preparation to return to Walker when the end came. Mrs. Case lived a long and active life, having unusual physical and mental ability and she accomplished much. Being kind and just to all, everyone who knew her became her fast friend and while all must bow to the inevitable, they cannot but mourn the loss of one so highly esteemed. The two sons and their families are now the only living relatives as the daughters are both dead, one having died when in her teens and the other some fifteen years ago. Cass County Pioneer, Friday Sept. 29, 1922.
