Biography

Samuel Manning

He was born on 10 Nov 1792, and baptised at Finedon, Northamptonshire, England on 24 Nov 1792. [1] He was the son of Charles Manning and his wife Mary (Mitchel) Manning.
His father Charles died when Samuel was six years old. [2]
He married on 23 Sep 1816 at Sandy, Bedfordshire, England to Mary Smith, probably the daughter of Henry Smith and Elizabeth Thomas. [3] [4] They had at least seven children:
Charles Manning (1817-1855)
Henry Manning (1819-1859) M. Charlotte Cambers
Betsey Manning (1820 - 1821)
Mary Manning (1825 - 1829)
Samuel Manning (1830-1882) M. Elizabeth Goodman
Mary Ann Manning (1833 - 1870) M. George Medlock
James Manning (1838-1909) M. Mary Randall
Samuel appears on the land tax records for Sandy, Bedfordshire between 1825 - 1830, as an owner occupier of a house, assessed at 5d in 1829. [5][6] [7] Prior to this at Sandy, between 1819 - 1830 Manning and Haines, presumably a business partnership appear renting land from an Ebeneezer Leech, [8][9][10]
At the time of the 1841 census he was living in Potton, Bedfordshire, England, listed as a Sawyer, living with Mary his wife and their five children. [11] By the time of the 1851 census, aged 57 he is living in Finedon, a timber merchant, employing four men. [12] [13] [14]
From 1854 - 1864 Samuel is listed as the licencee of the Red Lion public house in Potton, Bedfordshire, which he seems to have held down alongside the timber merchant business. After this his son Samuel took over the licence. [15] [16] [17] The Red Lion stayed in the Manning family for almost forty years between 1854 and 1893.
He died on 1 Jun 1864, with probate proved 17 Jun 1864 by his son James. [18] The Bedford Mercury of 25 Jun 1864 carries an advert to "Timber merchants, wheelwrights and others" for the stock in trade of the late Mr Samuel Manning, timber merchant and encloser, the sale to take place at the grounds of the Red Lion Inn, Potton on 28th June. [19][20] He was buried at Potton, Bedfordshire 7 Jun 1864. [21]
