David Mansell was a Jamestown colonist.

Birth and Parentage

Son of Edward Mansell and Mary Morgan, David Mansell was born c. 1595 in Glamorganshire, Wales.[3][4][5]

To the Colony of Virginia

In 1618, he boarded the ship Bona Nova and sailed to Jamestown.[6] He allied himself with Treasurer George Sandys,[7] and was living on the Treasurer's Land on 16 Feb 1624, when a count was done after the Indian Massacre of 1622.[8][9]

The Treasurer's Plantation

Only a year later, a more detailed census, called the muster of 1624/25, was carried out. Mansell is described in that census as a hired man, living on the Treasurer's Plantation (on the south side of the James River).[10] He was still living there in Dec 1625, when he witnessed the will of of Mr. Swifte in General Court.[11]

Planter and Burgess

By 1631, Mansell had established himself in Martin's Hundred (on the north side of the James River), where he patented land and in 1633 represented the community as a burgess.[12] He continued to serve as a burgess in 1640 for Johnson's Neck, Archer's Hope and Neck of Land; and for James City County in 1652.[12]

Land Transactions

  • 22 Jul 1635: Renewal of patent for 500 acres in Martins Hundred, James County[13]

  • 10 Oct 1638: 250 acres in Martins Hundred W. Upon land of Thomas Loveing, N. by a ridge of land whereon the Church stands.[15]
  • No Date: David Mansell of Va., gent., to WALTER PENROSE of Va., planter, bill of sale for his new plantation in Martins Hundred Parish in the rich neck. Witnesses: Robert Wild, & Ralph Roberts.[16]
  • 8 Sep 1645: MR. DAVID MANSELL, 72 acs. York Co., in Kiskeake Parish. Adj. Christopher Abbott & his own land.[17]

  • 7 Nov 1664: David Mansfeild & Robert Fristow, 654 acres on N side of Rappahanock County, [19]

Family

David Mansell married Lucy Webster, daughter of Roger Webster.[4] Several children are reported to this marriage, among them:[5]

  • David Mansfield, b. ~1623
  • Mary Mansel, b. ~ 1637, m. Henry Blagrave

Last Years and Death

Respect for the aging Mansell is evident in the patent records, particularly as he moves north into Rappahannock County. He is addressed as "gentleman," then "Mr.," and finally "Captain." These titles speak of his stature in the community and the way he was viewed by others.

David Mansell/Mansfield died in 1672, Rappahannock County, Virginia.[12]
