Biography

  • Witnesses to Joseph and Annie's marriage, by Rev. Edmund Moberly, were Mary and John McMillan (Annie's sister and brother). Consent for Annabella was given in writing by George Hope Erratt, the Guardian of Minors.
  • It is thought Joseph divided his working time between butchering and the gold diggings at Tia. He apparently had a butcher's shop near his house at Tia Station and supplied beef to the workers at the Tia diggings. From the same shop Annie sold flour, tea, white and brown sugar, jam, candles and hard-boiled lollies.
  • An Obituary probably from the Walcha News reads:
  • MR. JOSEPH MANSFIELD
  • A large circle of friends throughout the district will learn with deep regret of the death of Mr. Joseph Mansfield, of "Buena Vista", Brackendale which occurred at his home on March 19. Deceased had not enjoyed good health for some years, and about 12 months ago had a leg amputated, but this did not improve his condition.
  • He was a man possessed with a happy, smiling and cheerful disposition that combined with honest and upright dealings, won for him the goodwill of his fellow men. Deceased who was 79 years of age, and a native of the district, had resided at Brackendale for over 38 years. He is survived by his wife, four daughters in Mrs. W. Roper (Sydney), Mrs. A. W. Green (Orandumbie), Mrs. Galvin (Brackendale), Mrs. G. Holstein (Walcha), and sons Kenneth (Tia), Joseph Clarence (A.I.F.), John Colin (Brackendale), Arthur James Mansfield (Upper Tia), and Wilfred E. Mansfield (Walcha). The funeral took place after service at St. Andrew's Church at the Church of England cemetery, Rev. J. S. H. Cawte officiating. Members of the M.U. Oddfellows also attended and took part in the service as a mark of respect to a fellow brother.
  • Joseph was buried in Walcha General Cemetery.
