Biography

Juan Manuel de Villena was born in 1282. Later considered a warrior and Spanish hero, he was the son of Don Manuel de Castilla y León, the Lord of Villena, and his second wife Beatriz de Saboya. Juan succeeded his father in 1283 as Lord of Villena, Escalona, Alarcón, Elche, Peñafiel, Cartagena, Lorca, Castillo del Garci-Múñoz, Alcocer, Salmerón, Valdeolivas, Cuellar and Almenara. On the death of his father in 1284, the young prince was educated at the Court of his cousin, Sancho IV (son of Alfonso X).

In 1294 he received the order of Adelantado de Murcia and at the age of fourteen he served the king against the Moors in Granada. In 1304, the queen mother Doña María de Molina entrusted him with the political negotiations with Jaime II of Aragón, in favor of her son, Fernando IV, still a minor.

Having been very successful in these efforts, his prestige increased and he married Constanza, daughter of Jaime II. He was Mayordomo Mayor of the Kings Fernando IV and Alfonso XI of Castile, from March 25, 1311 to March 1, 11314. On the death of Fernando IV, don Juan Manuel was guardian of the future king, Alfonso XI, and regent of Castile (1321-1325).

Research Notes

He was the Duke of Peñafiel; one of the most important Spanish medieval writers.
