Biography

According to 1850-1870 US Census data, William B Maple was born in Ohio between September 8, 1798 and June 7, 1799.

On October 22, 1817 "William Maple married Sally Johnston" in Guernsey County, Ohio.[1] They were married by George Mitchell, Justice of the Peace.

In the 1820 US Census, a William Maple was enumerated in Knox Township, Jefferson County, Ohio near the family of David Maple Jr:
"William Maple" - Males: 1 (16-25); Females: 1 (16-25), 2 (0-9)
William B Maple was present in tax lists for Knox Township in 1826, 1827, and 1828.

In the 1830 US Census, a William Maple was enumerated in Yellow Creek Township, Columbiana County, Ohio near the family of David Maple III:
"William Maple" - Males: 1 (30-39), 2 (0-4); Females: 1 (20-29), 2 (10-14),1 (0-4)
William B Maple was present in an 1831 tax list for Yellow Creek Township.

According to T. Grant Maple, "William B Maple removed to Coshocton, County Ohio on December 25, 1832".[2] This was about 10 months before William's father, David Maple Jr, applied for a patent of 40 acres in Linton Township.

On October 14, 1839, William B Maple was appointed to administer the estate of his deceased father, David Maple.[3]

In the 1840 Census, William B Maple was enumerated in Linton Township, Coshocton, County, Ohio:
"William B Maple" - Males: 1 (40-49), 2 (10-14), 1 (5-9), 1 (0-4); Females: 1 (40-49), 2 (15-19), 1 (0-4)

23 January 1847 - William B. Maple purchased the northwest quarter of the southwest quarter of Section 9, Township 4, Range 4 and the east half of the southeast quarter of Section 8, Township 4, Range 4 from John Heslip.[4] Wheeling Township, Guernsey County adjoins Linton Township, Coshocton County.

On June 6, 1848. William B Maple sold his interest[5] in land his father, David Maple, patented on April 30, 1835.

In the 1850 Census, William B Maple was enumerated in Wheeling Township, Guernsey County, Ohio:[6]
Wm. B Maple (age 51) - born in Ohio
Sarah ............ (age 52) - born in Pennsylvania
Johnson ........ (age 21) - born in Ohio
Ann ............... (age 30) - born in Ohio
David ............ (age 20) - born in Ohio

23 June 1855 - William B Maple and wife Sarah sold the northwest quarter of the southwest quarter of Section 9, Township 4, Range 4 to David Maple.[7]

In the 1860 and 1870 US Censuses, William B Maple and wife Sarah were enumerated in Linton Township, Coshocton County, Ohio.

1 July 1863 - William B. Maple and wife Sarah sold the east half of the southeast quarter of Section 8, Township 4, Range 4 to James Maple.[8]

In 1873, William B Maple sold lot #46 in Linton.[9] This is the last record we have for him.

Note

T. Grant Maple placed William B Maple as a grandson of Jacob Maple Sr, who settled in Coshocton County, Ohio by 1807. Historical evidence now available, however, clearly indicates that William was a son of David R. Maple, who moved from Jefferson County to Coshocton County around 1833. This raises the question of why William was married in Guernsey County (adjacent to Linton Township, Coshocton County) in 1817, at about the age of 18. It seems likely that William left home in Knox Township, Jefferson County to work in Coshocton County for a time. In fact, in the 1820 US Census, the family of William's father in law, Ephraim Johnston, was enumerated in Linton Township next to the family of George Maple, a son of William Maple Sr. Like William, George had moved to Linton Township from Knox Township, Jefferson County. The Maples of Jefferson County and Coshocton County were much more intertwined than T. Grant Maple had imagined. See In Search of the Real David Maple Jr.

DNA Connections

Descent from David Maple Sr and his wife Mary (Johnson) Maple[10]
Figure A shows chromosome 9 matches within the Family Tree DNA database for a Maple who is a 3rd great grandson of David Maple Sr's son John Maple.
This tester shares a 21.36 cM DNA segment on chromosome 9 (base pairs 116724402 - 133054779) with a 4th great grandson of David's son Jacob Maple (D).
He also shares most of this segment with 3 descendants of David's son David R. Maple. [A 2nd great grandson of William B. Maple's daughter Ann (Maple) Fuller (B) matches on base pairs 115788707 - 127642231 (15.77 cM), and a MAPLE who is a 3rd great grandson of William's son James B. Maple (C) matches on base pairs 122547228 - 132048664 (9.64 cM). A third descendant of David R. Maple, a 3rd great grandson of both William B. Maple and Joseph Maple (A), matches on base pairs 119878770 - 139720795 (35.74 cM)].
It appears that all of these segments were passed down from David Maple Sr and/or his wife, Mary.
The MAPLE in (C), a descendant of William B. Maple, has a repeat value of 15 at Y-STR region DYS497. This value appears to have changed from 14 to 15 with the birth of David Maple Sr. We hope to find a patrilineal male descendant of Jacob Maple Sr who is willing to do Y-DNA testing. If, as expected, such a tester has a repeat value of 14 at Y-STR region DYS497, this will provide additional evidence that William B. Maple was not a descendant of Jacob Maple Sr.
