Biography by T. Grant Maple:[1]

"THE DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS MAPLE SR.

15. THOMAS MAPLE SR. b. Nov. 24, 1733, Middlesex Co., NJ; d. before 1820, New Windsor Twp., Middlesex Co., NJ; bur. on his farm, Middlesex Co., NJ according to the Hoagland family genealogy. m. Elinor Tappin, prob. ca. 1758, NJ; b. May 25, 1733, Middlesex Co., NJ; d. WFT Est. 1770-1828, Windsor Twp., Middlesex Co., NJ. Served as teamster, Capt. Cahill's Team Brigade; in the Continental Service at the Post at Trenton, March 1, 1780. (NJ Wagon Master General's Department. Book 1, page 2). He witnessed the will of Henry Davis of the South Ward of New Brunswick, Middlesex Co., NJ on Aug. 27, 1770 (N.J. Archives. First Series. Vol. XXIV. Calendar of Wills Vol. V, 1771-1780, p. 129).

NEW JERSEY RECORDS Deeds by Benjamin Maple Jr. and his wife Sarah, of New Brunswick (twp.), Middlesex Co., NJ, to William and Jacob Maple, of New Windsor Twp., Middlesex Co., NJ, in 1772 show that each received 1/3 of a 340 acre tract, adjoining land of Thomas Maple, their brother, strongly implying that Thomas was also recipient of the other third of the original tract. The deeds show that Thomas's land adjoined that of "Martin Hoagland deceased". This latter was Martinus Hoagland (b. 1704; d. about July 17, 1767, Windsor Twp., Middlesex Co., NJ), grandfather of the Martin Hoagland Jr. who m. Lucretia Maple, dau. of Thomas Maple. The deed to Thomas no longer exists. Tax Roll, Windsor Twp., Middlesex Co., NJ: June 1778 Maple, Thomas 46 acres, 4 horses, 4 cattle. March 1779 Maple, Thomas 46 acres, 3 horses, 3 cattle. Feb. 1780 Maple, Thomas 46 acres, 3 horses, 2 cattle. May 1780 Maple, Thomas 46 acres, 4 horses, 3 cattle, 1 hog. Jan. 1781 Maple, Thomas 2 houses & lots, 1 horse, 1 cattle, 1 hog. He does not appear on the tax rolls for 1782 and later. Assuming that Thomas originally received 113 1/3 acres in 1772, the tax rolls indicate that he had disposed of much of the land before 1778, and nearly all the remainder in late 1780. It is interesting that Stephen Maple, appearing first on the tax rolls as a single man in Windsor Twp., Middlesex Co., in May 1780, is shown in Jan.1781 as having 46 acres there, but not in Feb. 1782. From 1784 to 1787 Stephen is shown as only a householder in Upper Freehold Twp., Monmouth Co. Apparently he had acquired Thomas' 46 acres in late 1780, but soon sold it.

PENNSYLVANIA RECORDS Thomas Maple does not appear in the 1790, 1800 or 1810 Census for Fayette and Washington Counties, nor in the 1800 and 1810 Census for Greene County (Greene Co. was still part of Washington Co. in 1790). However, his son Aaron Maple appears in the 1800 Census for German Twp., Fayette Co., as also does a Robert Maple who may have been a brother to Aaron.

OHIO RECORDS No Census records exist for Ohio in 1800 or 1810. This deficiency has been met in part by Tax Lists; Thomas Maple does not appear on any of these. Larrison Fitzpatrick Maple, grandson of Capt. Benjamin Franklin Maple, in a letter of Dec. 15, 1919 to John Jameson Mapel, related a tradition that two of the brothers who migrated to Western Pennsylvania or Ohio were killed by Indians. Nothing has been found to substantiate this. The Aaron Maple who appears in the 1820, 1830, 1840, and 1860 Census for Ross Twp., Jefferson Co., OH, was the son of Aaron Maple Sr. and grandson of Thomas. The female of 60-70 in his household in 1830 and 70-80 in 1840 (hence b. 1760-1770) was possibly his mother, Abigail (Maple) Maple, wife of Aaron Maple Sr., or his mother-in-law.

FOURTH GENERATION: The names of only two children of Thomas Maple are known for certain. His son Aaron m. Abigail Maple, eldest child of Thomas's brother William. This suggests that Thomas may have been older than William. His dau. Lucretia m. Martin Hoagland Jr. Robert Maple, who m. Mary Maple, dau. of William Maple Sr., is also believed to be a son of Thomas.

Children of Thomas and Elinor (Tappin) Maple:

151. Aaron Maple b. ca. 1770 NJ; d. ca. 1840-1850?
m. his first cousin, Abigail Maple (141), ca. 1796, dau. of William and Kesiah (Larrison) Maple; b. prob.1773, Middlesex Co., NJ; d. 1846, Ross Twp., Jefferson Co., OH.
1820 Census, Ross Twp., Jefferson Co., OH.
1830 Census, Ross Twp., Jefferson Co., OH.
1840 Census, Ross Twp., Jefferson Co., OH.
[Note by profile manager - Here T. Grant Maple was confused. There was no Aaron Maple enumerated in the 1820 and 1830 Censuses for Ross Township. Thomas' grandson Aaron Maple (age 30-40) was enumerated in Ross Township in 1840.]
The following census data may be for a different Aaron Maple whose father has not been identified:
1800 Census, German Twp., Fayette Co., PA: Mapel, Aron 1 male under 10, 1 male 16 to 26, 1 female 16 to 26. An Aaron Maple was licensed to keep a tavern in German Twp., Fayette Co., PA in 1805. 1820 Census, Columbiana Co., OH, Maple, Aaron 1 male 45 & up, 2 males 16-26, 1 male 16 to 18, 2 males under 10, 1 female 26 to 45, 1 female 10 to 16, 2 females under 10.
In 1826, An Aaron Maple was a freeholder in District 6, Unity Twp., Columbiana Co., OH.

The only other listing in Unity Twp. for the surname was Maple, Davidson 1 male 15-20, 1 female 15-20, posibly a just-married son of the preceeding Aaron Maple.
1840 Census, Newark, Licking Co., OH: Maple, Aaron 1 male 70-80. 1 male 30-40, 2 males 20-30, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 15-20.

Rem. in 1792 from NJ to Lexington, KY. There is an unusual history of frequent deafness in the Hoagland family traced as far back as two children of Martinus Hoagland, grandfather of Martin Hoagland Jr. See Broderbund Software, Family Tree Vol. 5, Tree #1697. See also Daniel Hoagland Carpenter, "History and Genealogy of the Hoagland Family in America". Published by Dr. Cornelius N. Hoagland. John Polhemus Printing Co., NY. 1891. This last has a picture of the home of Martin Hoagland at Lexington, KY. He was an officer of the Baptist Church.
153. Robert Maple b. prob. 1765, (he was 85 in 1850 Census); d. Nov., 1851?, Knox Twp., Jefferson Co., OH.
m. Mary ("Dolley") Maple (143), 1792?, dau. of William Sr. (14) and Kesiah (Larrison) Maple; b. 1775? Middlesex Co., NJ; d. 1852, Jefferson Co., OH; bur. Osage Cem., Knox Twp., Jefferson Co., OH.
His Will pro. Nov. 18, 1851, Jefferson Co., OH (p. 36. Gen. File 1295, also p. 241, Gen. File 1546), names all chn.
1800 Census, German Twp., Fayette Co., PA. Census 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850 Knox Twp., Jefferson Co., OH. For chn. see 1431 et seq. in William Maple Sr. chapter.

[Addition in T. Grant Maple's 2004 CD revision:
"154? Mary Maple b. ca. 1766 (prob. Middlesex Co., NJ); d. ?; bur. unmarked grave in forgotten cem. on Duck Creek, Harrison Co., WV. Said to have been from Philadelphia, PA or near Wilmington, DE. [more likely Princeton, NJ].
m. William Davisson, prob. ca. 1786, son of Andrew and Sarah (Smith) Davisson; b. ca. 1760, NJ; d. before 1844; bur. Broad Run Cem. He served in the Rev. War per tradition. Was poss. in Greene or Fayette Co., PA. for a short while before removing to Duck Creek, Harrison Co., WV in late 1790.
Definite information on the parentage of Mary is lacking. As she named two daus. Eleanor and Lucretia seems to point to Thomas Maple Sr. and his wife Elinor Tappin, who had a dau. Lucretia. But Aaron Maple of Unity Twp., Columbiana Co., OH named a son Davidson Maple; Aaron is likely the Aaron Maple who was earlier listed as a tavern keeper in Fayette Co., PA; later, he joined descendants of David Maple Sr. in Decatur Co., IN. This suggests Mary and Aaron may have been children of David Maple Sr."]

Note that in the original (1993) printed version of T. Grant Maple's book, Thomas' daughter Mary was listed as a daughter of Benjamin Maple III and his wife Isabella.

In Genealogical History of the Maple/Mapel Family in America (2001 edition), in the chapter for Benjamin Maple III, T. Grant Maple wrote:
In 1997 a Hoagland Family Genealogy printed in 1891 came to this author's attention. It states that Thomas Maple Sr. and his wife Elinor were bur. on the family farm in Middlesex Co., NJ. As Thomas Maple Sr. disappears from the NJ tax lists in 1782, it had been assumed he left NJ at that time when four of his brothers are known to have left NJ. If the Hoagland book is correct, then Thomas Maple Sr. may have died between 1782 and 1790. Thomas may thus have been father of one or more, such as 113. Mary Maple, attributed to Benjamin Maple III.
In fact, the Hoagland genealogy cited makes no mention of the burial place of Thomas and Eleanor. All it says is:
The parents of Lucretia Maple were Thomas Maple, born Nov. 24, 1733 and Elinor Tappin, born May 25, 1733. Letter of Dr. Leonard W. Taylor[2]
