Guill lived a remarkable short life, he died in 'black' November (aged 33) during the 1918 Flu pandemic.
Born in Potchefstroom to G. F. Marais of Paarl and Kitty Kock daughter of General J.H.M Kock and granddaughter of General S.Schoeman.
The family moved to Zeerust just before the Boer War. A few months later Guill aged 14 joined the local commando at the siege of Mafeking, here he was wounded. On recovery he rejoined his commando near Pretoria. After the fall of the capital he retreated with the Boer forces and was taken POW in Mozambique and sent to Alcobaca In Portugal.
On his return he finished school at Franschoek Hoerskool. He attended Victoria Collage in Stellenbosch and qualified with a BA. He received a Government scholarship to attend The Royal Veterinary College in London.
On graduating he came back to South Africa and served under Dr Arnold Teiler at Onderstepoort Pretoria. He was then appointed as State Vet for the Standerton area based in Volksrust.
With the outbreak of the 'Spanish' Flu pandemic in South Africa there was a shortage of medical personnel because they were serving on the Western Front. The government commandeered all able bodied Veterinarians to assist. Guill succumbed to to the virus despite his friend Dr Louis Leopods best efforts.
