Known as the Missile Man of India for his work on the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology. A.P.K. Abdul Kalam was an Indian aerospace scientist who also served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007.

Avul was born in 1931, the son of Jainulabiddin Marakayar, an Imam of a mosque, and Ashiamma Jainulabiddin, his wife. His father also transported pilgrims via boat to and from Rameswaram. By 1914, when the Pamban bridge was completed, his father lost his source of income. As a result Kalam would sell newspapers to help with the family finances.

He attended Schwartz Higher Secondary School in Ramanathapuram, moving to St. Joseph College in Tiruchirappalli, where he earned a degree in Physics, graduating in 1954. From there, he attended Madras Institute of Technology where he went on to study aerospoace engineering. [1] He passed away in 2015.[2] Timeline

  • 1989: Veer Savarkar Award
  • 1997: Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award
  • 2002: Elected 11th President of India
  • 2007: Left office and became a traveling professor.
  • 2007: King Charles II Medal
  • 2009: given the Hoover Medal by ASME Foundation (USA)
  • 20013: Von Braun Award by National Space Society (USA)
