Catherine Marchand a des origines françaises.

Catherine MARCHAND

Elle naît autour de 1644 dans la paroisse St-Sulpice, Faubourg St-Germain à Paris, en Île-de-France, fille de Pierre Marchand et de Geneviève Lespine.[1] (22 ans en 1666, 23 en 1667, 36 en 1681 aux recensements)

Migration

En 1659, Jeanne Mance et d'autres sont en France recrutant pour Montréal. Catherine Marchant est parmi les gens recrutés, pour entrer au service de Jeanne Mance. Le navire est le Saint-André.[2]

Le Saint-André quitte La Rochelle en juillet 1659. Pendant 2 ans, il avait servi d'hôpital aux troupes de la marine, mais n'avait pas été désinfecté d'aucune façon. Il y aura environ 8 à 10 décès par maladie durant le voyage à cause de ceci. Le voyage dura 2 mois, avec de multiples tempêtes pour ralentir la traversée. Il arrive finalement devant Québec le 9 septembre 1659, plusieurs passagers étant malades. C'est finalement le 29 septembre que Marguerite Bourgeoys, qui était aussi du voyage, atteindra Montréal avec les recrues aptes à y arriver.[2]

Catherine fut témoin au contrat de mariage d'Estiennette Alton le 9 décembre 1659, elle le signe.[3] Les deux femmes se marient le même jour, ayant voyagé ensemble sur le Saint-André. Perrine Picoté de Belestre et Catherine Gauchet ont aussi été de ce voyage, présentes à son contrat de mariage.

Mariage

Catherine Marchand et Laurent Archambault signent un contrat de mariage le 14 décembre 1659 par devant Bénigne Basset dit Deslauriers. Catherine est fille de défunts Pierre Marchand et de Geneviève Lespine de la ville de Paris, faubourg St-Germain, paroisse de St-Sulpice, Laurent est fils de Jacques Archambault et de Françoise Toureau, qui sont présents au contrat, ainsi que plusieurs membres de sa famille, ainsi que Claude Robutel dit Saint-André et son épouse Suzanne de Gabriel. De la part de la future on trouve cités présents Gabriel Souart prêtre curé, Jeanne Mance administratrice de l'hôpital, Jacques Le Ber et Charles Le Moyne, marchands, damoiselle Perrine Picoté de Belestre, Catherine Gauchet et autres. Les futurs signent tous deux le contrat, on y voit aussi la signature de Jean Gervaise et d'autres témoins.[4]

Le 7 janvier 1660 à Notre-Dame de Montréal fut célébré le mariage entre Laurent Archambaud, fils de Jacques Archambaud et de Françoise Toureau, et Catherine Marchand, fille de défunt Pierre Marchand et de Geneviève Lespine, en présence de Jacques Archambaud père de l'époux, de Jean Gervaise, Gilles Lozon et Urbain Tessier ses beaux-frères, et de plusieurs autres amis communs des parties. (le prêtre officiant a omis de signer sur cette copie)[5]

Ils eurent 12 enfants. [1][6][7]

Catherine fut marraine de Catherine Jetté le 10 mars 1661; de Catherine Lauzon le 23 mai 1666; de Louis Gueretin le 3 janvier 1668; de Catherine Pertuis le 23 janvier 1670, tous à Montréal (ND); à la Pointe-aux-Trembles de Montréal (St-Enfant-Jésus), elle fut marraine d'André Carière le 29 septembre 1675, et de plusieurs autres enfants. Elle fut présente au mariage de Françoise Lauzon le 20 novembre 1675 à Montréal (ND), ainsi qu'à d'autres mariages à la Pointe-aux-Trembles.[6]

Décès
Catherine Marchand, femme de Laurent Archambault, est inhumée le 25 février 1713 à la Pointe-aux-Trembles de Montréal. Presque tous les parents ont assisté aux funérailles. Seuls son époux, Maître N Senet et Gilles Marin ont signé avec le prêtre Roche.[10]

Catherine was born around 1644 in the parish of St-Sulpice, Faubourg St-Germain in Paris, Île-de-France, daughter of Pierre Marchand and of Geneviève Lespine.[1] (22 in 1666, 23 in 1667, 36 in 1681 on censuses)

Migration

In 1659, Jeanne Mance and others were in France recruiting for Montréal. Catherine Marchant is among the people so recruited, to enter into the service of Jeanne Mance. The ship they sailed on was the Saint-André.[2]

The Saint-André left La Rochelle in July 1659. For 2 years, it had served as a hospital ship for the troops of the navy, but had not been disinfected in any way. There will be around 8 to 10 deaths from illness during the voyage due to this. The trip lasted 2 months, with multiple storms to slow the crossing. It finally arrived before Québec city on 9 September 1659, many passengers being sick. Finally, on 29 September, Marguerite Bourgeoys, who was among those on this voyage, will reach Montréal with the recruits able to make it.[2]

Catherine was witness at the marriage contract of Estiennette Alton on 9 December 1659, she signs it.[3] The two got married the same day, having traveled together on the Saint-André. Perrine Picoté de Belestre and Catherine Gauchet were also part of this voyage, both present at Catherine's marriage contract.

Marriage

Catherine Marchand and Laurent Archambault signed a marriage contract on 14 December 1659 before notary Bénigne Basset dit Deslauriers. Catherine is daughter of the late Pierre Marchand and the late Geneviève Lespine of the city of Paris, faubourg St-Germain, parish of St-Sulpice, Laurent is son of Jacques Archambault and of Françoise Toureau, who were present at the contract signing, as well as many other members of his family, as well as Claude Robutel dit Saint-André and his wife Suzanne de Gabriel. On the part of the future wife one finds cited present Gabriel Souart priest curé, Jeanne Mance administrator of the hospital, Jacques Le Ber and Charles Le Moyne, merchants, damoiselle Perrine Picoté de Belestre, Catherine Gauchet and others. The future couple both sign the contract, one also sees the signature of Jean Gervaise and other witnesses.[4]

On January 7th 1660 in Notre-Dame de Montréal was celebrated the marriage between Laurent Archambaud, son of Jacques Archambaud and of Françoise Toureau, and Catherine Marchand, daughter of the late Pierre Marchand and of Geneviève Lespine, in the presence of Jacques Archambaud father of the groom, Jean Gervaise, Gilles Lozon and Urbain Tessier his brothers-in-law, and several other mutual friends of the parties. (the officiating priest omitted signing this copy)[5]

They had 12 children, 1 of whom died young, 4 of whom will enter religious orders, and the rest married. [1][6][7] (listed above)

Catherine was godmother of Catherine Jetté on 10 Mar 1661; of Catherine Lauzon on 23 May 1666; of Louis Gueretin on 3 Jan 1668; of Catherine Pertuis on 23 Jan 1670, all in Montréal (ND); in Pointe-aux-Trembles de Montréal (St-Enfant-Jésus), she was godmother of André Carière on 29 Sept 1675, and a number of other children. She was present at the marriage of Françoise Lauzon on 20 Nov 1675 in Montréal (ND), as well as other marriages in Pointe-aux-Trembles.[6]

Death
Catherine Marchand, wife of Laurent Archambault, was buried on the 25th of February 1713 in Pointe-aux-Trembles de Montréal. Almost all the relatives assisted at the funeral. Only her husband, Maître N Senet and Gilles Marin signed with the priest Roche.[10]
