Biography

Notables Project
Red Shoes Marchand is Notable.

Red Shoes Marchand was born about 1720 and was the son of Captain Louis Marchand (French commander of Fort Toulouse in Alabama) and his Muskogee Indian wife, Sehoy. According to Native American Indian matrilineal traditions, like his mother, he was part of the Wind Clan, and his own children were members of their mother's clan also.

Red Shoes was an Indian Chief of the prestigious Wind Clan (Hutalgalgi), the highest ranking tribe of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. He primarily lived in modern Alabama, but his influence extended well into modern Mississippi.

His sister, also named Sehoy, married Lachlan McGillivray who had migrated to the Colonies and became a wealthy fur trader and planter in Georgia. Their son Alexander McGillivray. was raised by Red Shoes, In proper Muskogean tradition, as if he were his own son and heir.

His nephew Alexander McGillivray became Chief of the Upper Creek (Muscogee) Indians and was one of the most powerful and historically important Native American Indian Chiefs among the Creek of the Southeast.

His grandnephew was famed Chief "Red Eagle" of the Wind Clan (Hutalgalgi), the highest ranking tribe of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation.

His great grandnephew was Major David Moniac, an American military officer who in 1822 became the first Native American Indian graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Red Shoes MARCHAND died about 1783 [1] in Choctaw Nation East.

Research Notes

Some sources say that Red Shoes was the son of Sehoy's second husband Red Shoes (Choctaw chief).

There is no proven data that Red Shoes is the father of Atahobia which was believed by the late Dr. Irv MAY of Texas A&M University. In his research, he was led to believe that Red Shoes (son of Red Shoes and Sehoy) was the half brother of Atahobia. The data regarding Red Shoes and Sehoy is validated and the fact that she had another son by a Choctaw in addition to her children by the Frenchman, Jean Baptiste Marchand de Courtel is also validated. Coushatta history speaks of Red Shoes (Jr.) as half Choctaw and he is known to have maintained associations with the Yowani Choctaws in Louisiana and Texas.
