Biography

Frank John was the oldest son of Frank and Katherine Marek, born on 10 January 1890 and baptized 8 days later at St. Procopius Church.

Frank's birth certificate puts the family at 10 Nutt Court in Chicago (now Miller Street). His sex is listed as "B" (perhaps boy), he is the fourth child (which means one died before him), his mother is Katerina Ujkova Marek (30), his father is Frank Marek (33) who is a Lebman, which seems to be a Germanization of laborer.

On the 1900 Census, Frank lived with the Marek family (parents and seven children) at 672 Throop Street in Chicago. Frank was 10 years old an in school.

On the 1910 Census, newlyweds Frank and Josephine Kodat Marek moved in with Josephine's parents, John and Josie Kodat at 1720 Burlington Street in Chicago. Frank (age 21) was a teamster for a box factory, and Josie was 19. The couple had been married one month for the 28 April enumeration.

On his 1917 WWI Draft Registration Card, Frank lists his adress as 3 Grove in Brookfield. he worked at American Express in Chicago, and claimed his dependents (wife and daughter) as an exemption from duty. He was of medium height and medium build with brown eyes and light brown hair. He listed old leg fractures as a disability.

On the 1920 Census, Frank (age 30) and Josephine (age 29) owned a home with a mortgage at 5 Grove Avenue in Brookfield. Frank was a claim agent at an express company. The couple had two children, Evelyn (age 9) and Frank (age one month).

On the 1930 Census, Frank (age 40) and Josephine (age 39) owned a home worth $11,000 (with a radio) at 1845 Clinton Avenue in Berwyn. Frank was a solicitor for American RR. The couple's children were Evelyn (age 19), a steonographer for a trust company, and Frank (age 10).

According to an article in the Denni Hlasatel, Frank was killed when he was trying to start his car near the corner of 62nd Street and Melvina in Chicago. After attempting to start the vehicle, he fell underneath the car and was crushed. He died within a few hours at Holy Cross Hospital in Chicago.

Frank was waked at Svec Funeral Home in Berwyn before his funeral mass at Epiphany of our Lord Church in Chicago and his interment at St. Adalbert Cemetery in Niles.
