Research Notes

Mert [Newton] also was born in St. Louis with Mother listed as living at 2826 Semple and Father in Little Rock, Ark. Father's occuaption listed as Traveling salesman. I, of course, never knew Mert but heard stories about his exceptional music talent." [Letter from Clara Louise Marin to Greg Newton, July 15, 2010.]

"Mert, who was I think the most gifted musically of all three, died at age 33 in our country home outside St. Louis. He had lung cancer. The manner of his death was complicated in that he was on board a steamer in the South Pacific touring with a band, collapsed and had to be shipped/flown home to St. Louis. He was dying. He actually died in my bed (I was evicted for the occasion). I was 13 at the time. He played with several big bands including Russ Columbo and Joe Reichman." [E-mail from Sharon Southerland to Greg Newton, April 11, 2010.]

He was cared for also by his then-companion, an Irish-born woman called Evelina Devlin.

Russ Columbo (1918-1934), was an American singer, violinist and actor, By the time of his tragic death at the age of twenty-six, he was generally conceded to reside at the pinnacle of the crooning genre, the chief rival to the hegemony enjoyed by Rudy Vallee and Bing Crosby. [If Mert did indeed play with Columbo's orchestra, he was not older than 18 at the time.]

Joe Reichman was affectionately known by his contemporaries as the "old piano pounder". His orchestra recorded 80 sides for ARC & RCA Victor, between June 1934 and February 1942.

Death certificate June 1, 1949, unmarried Merton Field Marin died of lung cancer at his mothers residence at Bourbon RR2, Crawford-Boone County, Missouri. Usual residence was St. Louis, Missouri, where he was a musician.
