Biography

Judith (Marion) Grier was a daughter of a Huguenot emigrant (1540-1790).

Little is known of Mary, Elizabeth, Ann and Judith, the 4 daughters of French Huguenot immigrant to South Carolina, Benjamin Marion and his 2nd wife, Mary (Unknown) Marion. The 3 of them are listed in an article about the Marion family, focusing on General Francis Marion, the celebrated American Revolutionary War patriot and hero, who harassed British forces occupying the Southern Colonies between 1775 and 1782. Francis' three aunts [half aunts as he descended from Benjamin's 1st wife; Judith (Baluet) Marion] are known to have existed but that is about all. Mary is believed to have been the oldest, born ca. 1711, then Judith in about 1716 (with some brothers in-between), then Elizabeth around 1723, and finally Anne, the youngest, b: ca. 1727. [1]

Judith Marion was born about 1716 (not 1710 as some genealogies state) on her parents' plantation at St. James, Goose Creek Parish, Berkeley County, English Province of South Carolina. She was the 2nd daughter of Benjamin Marion, a French Huguenot immigrant to South Carolina, and his 2nd wife, Mary (Unknown) Marion. Her parents died in 1735 (Benjamin Marion) and 1750 (Mary), both in Berkeley County, South Carolina.[2]

Judith Marion had 2 marriages and at least 6 children:[3]

  1. Ebenezer Singleton, b: ca. 1700 in Craven County, South Carolina; m. ca. 1735 in Berkeley Co., South Carolina; he died around 1746; they had 3 sons:
    1. William Singleton b: ca. 1736 in Horry County. S.C.
    2. Ebenezer Singleton b: ca. 1740 in Horry County. S.C.
    3. Richard Singleton b: ca. 1746 in Horry County, South Carolina
  2. Patrick Grier, b: ca. 1710 in South Carolina; m. ca. 1750 in Georgetown, Georgetown County, South Carolina; d: 1767 [4]
    1. Mary Ann Grier b: ca. 1752 in Georgetown, South Carolina
    2. James Grier b: ca. 1753 in Georgetown, South Carolina
    3. Samuel Grier b: ca. 1756 in Georgetown, South Carolina

There may have been a third marriage to Daniel Laine on 23 Jun 1774. [5]

Judith (Marion) Singleton, Grier passed away about 1811 in South Carolina, USA. She was over 90 years old. One genealogy indicates that she died 16 Dec 1812. [6]
