George Maris was born in Worcestershire, England.

George Maris was born about 1595, based on the ages of his children, in Grafton Flyford, Worcestershire, England, son of Richard Maris.

George married Alice Collier on 20 June 1622 in Bradley, Worcestershire. Their children were:

  1. Anne Maris (~1623 - )
  2. Richard Maris (~1625 - )
  3. Elizabeth Maris (~1626 - )
  4. Francis Maris (~1628 - 1671)
  5. George Maris (~1631 - 1704)
  6. Mary Maris (~1638 - ).

He was a prosperous husbandman (tenant farmer)[1].

He wrote his will on 18 September 1656 in Grafton Flyford[1].

George died late in 1658 in Grafton Flyford, aged about 63,as his will was proved 22 January 1659[1].

Will Transcription

In the name of God, Amen. I, George Maris of Grafton Flyford in the County of Worcs, husbandman, being weak in bodie, but in perfect sense and memory (praise be given to God for it) make my last will and testament in manner and forme following. Commending my spirit to God that gave it, and my body to the earth from whence it was taken to be buried in decent sort, as to my executors shall seem worth. My worldly goods I thus dispose. I give and bequeath unto my sonne George the summe of ten pounds to be paid within one year after my decease. I give also to the same sonne the best of the bedsteads standing now in the [corne?] Chamber together with one bed and necessary furniture there unto belonging at the discretion of my loving wife. I give also unto the same, my sonne George, one cupboard standing now in the buttery and also one great iorne chest. My will also is that my sonne George shall have his diet with my executors for the space of one year after my decease if he shall come for it and shall continue so long unmarried. One more year and a half is the span of time allowed unto my executors for the making the best of my personal estate and paying of the legacies. I bequeath unto my sonne Francis one brown bay mare which is now four year old. I give unto my sonne Richard one shilling to buy him a pair of gloves. I give unto my daughter Anne one shilling to buy a pair of gloves. I give unto my daughter Elizabeth one shilling to buy a pair of gloves. I give unto my sonne Francis, my sonne George, my daughter Maria the benefit of a bond of ten pounds from my sonne Richard at the time specified in the said bond. Moreover, I give unto my sonne George our table board together with a frame being over the entrance. I give unto my daughter Maria the best of the three ewers. All the rest of my personal estate (with debts and funeral expenses defrayed) my will is should be equally divided between my loving wife, my sonne Francis and my daughter Mary. I ……. and appoint my loving wife and my sonne Francis executors of this my last will and testament. In Witness whereof I have set my hand and seal this eighteenth day of September in the year of Our Lord one thousand, six hundred and fifty six: George Maris Sealed publical in the presence of G. Darbin, Henry Dison, Richard Maris. Memoranded in this my loving brother in law Henry Dison and my loving neighbour G Darbin to be our satisfied my last will and testament. And to each of them I give three shillings as a token of my love to each of them resolved.

This will was proved at London the two and twentieth day of January 1658, English Style

These are the links to the Maris DNA project for both the Maris of Cambridgeshire and Maris of Worcestershire (and they are still looking for male volunteers). As of today the claims are that the line has stopped with his brother and father is Richard Maris of Grafton Flyford.
