Biography

Frank was the eldest son of Orzao and Theresa Maritote, born in Brancino, Italy on September 22, 1892. He emigrated to the United States with his family in December, 1911. Initially the family lived in New York City, but eventually they moved to Chicago.

Frank was married three times. First to Susie Cribari, on August 6, 1914, with whom he had a daughter, Marie Clara in June, 1915 (died in February, 1990, married name was McCaffer). Susie died in March, 1923 from an abdominal obstruction. On his World War I draft registration card dated June, 1917, Frank lists a wife and two children, but no other information.

His draft registration lists his employment as a laborer and elevator operator for the Chicago Tunnel Company. He was described as having a medium build and brown eyes and black hair.

Frank married Rose Canino and they had at least three children: Orazzio on April 25, 1927; Mafalda on April 28, 1929; and a daughter Theresa L. Navarro, nee Maritote, who died in 2008.

Frank married a third time, to Rena Candice. In 1949/1950 another son, Frank, was born.

Frank was a known as a body guard and strong-man for Al Capone during Capone rein in Chicago in the 1920's and 1930's. He sometimes used the alias "Frankie Diamond" or just "Diamond". He was found guilty of extortion in 1944 and served several years in prison. When he returned to Chicago, Al Capone was in poor health and living in Florida. The "Outfit" was slowly disintegrating and Frank was working in the contracting business when he was killed.

Frank was gunned down in his driveway as he was closing the garage door after moving his car on August 20, 1954. His 4 year old son, Frank, had pleaded with his mother to be allowed to be with his father.

It was suspected that Frank was "hit" by a rival Chicago gang, but the case was never solved.

Frank is buried at Hillside Cemetery, Cook County, Illinois. Plot: Section E, Block 8, Lot 1
