Frederick was born about 1856, the son of Wilhelm Merckel and Sara Kock. He was baptized on Dec 19, 1756 in Ulster County, New York. Baptism was recorded at the central Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, Ulster County, New York; sponsors were: Jacob Nottingham, Magdalena Kok[1][2]
He married Rebecca Catherine Pickard on 29 July 1785 in Newark, Niagara, Canada. Rebecca was the daughter of William and (?) (Wintermute) Pickard.
Four Merkel|Markle brothers served with Butler's Rangers: James, William, John and Henry.[3]Information on Butler's Rangers. These four and three additional brothers settled in Lincoln and Wentworth Counties. On September 5, 1795, Col. Ralfe Clench certified that "Frederick Marakle who served in Butlers late Corps of Rangers was one of the most active men in the Corps, a brave & willing Soldier, he is married to [the] daughter of Wm Pickard an old Ranger".
He passed away August 1836 at Niagara Twp., Lincoln County, Ontario, Canada [2]
